Thua Thien – Hue to Spend 4.9 billion VND on Forest Restoration

The Union of Friendship Organizations of Thua Thien Hue province in collaboration with Phong Chuong Commune People's Committee on Feb. 23 held a conference on "Restoration of indigenous forests on sand combined with sustainable livelihood development and climate change adaptation" funded by Solidarity Service International.

Speaking at the opening of the conference, Dr. Tran Thi Mai, president of the Thua Thien Hue Friendship Union, highlighted the importance of protecting the ecological environment in the region, stressing that most natural forests today have gradually disappeared or degraded, especially in sparsely populated areas.

The impact from uncontrolled exploitation of resources and forests have created many consequences for human life and nature.

To help solve this problem, the Provincial Union of Friendship Organizations and People's Committees, the Institute of Natural Resources and Environment and the People's Committee of Phong Chuong Commune have mobilized Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development of Germany to sponsor the project "Ecosystem-based adaption to climate change and sustainable income creation."

At the event, Vo Dinh Anh Tuan, vice president and general secretary of the Thua Thien Hue Friendship Union, who is also head manager of project, presented an overview of its activities, expected results and future plans.

The project will improve capacity and adaptability to climate change for communities living in the sandy area of ​​Phong Chuong commune. It includes afforestation, raising awareness on environmental protection, sustainable development and income generating activities.

The total project budget is EUR 178,417 (VND 4.9 billion), of which SODI funds EUR 147,477 and the rest is from the local budget.

Through the conference, the project managing board also received comments from the representatives of the people in Phong Chuong commune to improve the preparation and execution of the plans.

They hope to receive enthusiastic support from the people and the commune People's Committee so that the project can be successful.
