Two Vietnamese universities have made it into the top 1000 universities worldwide in the 2022 QS World University Rankings by UK educational organization Quacquarelli Symonds (QS).

The Vietnam National University, Hanoi and the Vietnam National University - Ho Chi Minh City featured in Group 801-1,000 best universities globally for the fourth consecutive time. The Vietnam National University, Ho Chi Minh City has been placed at 398th for academic reputation. Its ranking has been improved over the past three years, Vietnamplus reported.

In addition, Ton Duc Thang University and Hanoi University of Science and Technology are also named in the list for the first time, in the 1001-1200 Group and 1201 Plus Group respectively.

Four Vietnamese universities have made it into the list of top universities worldwide in the 2022 QS World University Rankings.

US’s Massachusetts Institute of Technology continued to be named as the best university in the world for the 10th year in a row. It was followed by Oxford, while Stanford and Cambridge at equal third.

In Southeast Asia, Singapore has three educational institutions in the list with two in the top 15. Malaysia has 22, Indonesia 16, Thailand 10, and the Philippines four.

The United States again boasts the most top universities, with four in the top 5.

The 2022 QS World University Rankings feature 1,300 of the world’s most prestigious universities in 93 countries and territories, based on a methodology that assesses each institution on six metrics, including academic reputation, employer reputation, faculty/student ratio, citations per faculty, international faculty ratio and international student ratio.

Earlier, three Vietnamese universities: Vietnam National University in Hanoi, Vietnam National University in Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi University of Science and Technology, have also been included in the Times Higher Education's Asia University Rankings for 2021.

Vietnam National University in Hanoi for the two continuous years was honored in the rankings in the 251-300 group, taking the lead in Vietnam.

Hanoi University of Science and Technology was ranked in the 351- 400 group and Vietnam National University in Ho Chi Minh City in the 401+ group.

Among the three Vietnamese universities, Vietnam National University in Hanoi gained the highest number of points in 4/5 ranking criteria: teaching, research, citations, and international outlook, while, Vietnam National University in Ho Chi Minh City earned the highest score in the criterion of industry income.

Compared to the ranking results in 2020, all criteria of Vietnam National University in Hanoi increased, with the criterion of citations having the sharpest increase, at 8%. It was followed by research (up 7.4%), teaching (up 1.6%), industry income (up 1.6%) and international outlook (0.6%).

Times Higher Education uses a set of criteria comprising of 13 indicators belonging to five groups: teaching (30%), research (30%), citations (30%), industry income (7.5%) and international outlook (7.5%). With such an assessment, it’s hard for universities that are not research ones or do not have strength in research to be ranked.

In 2021, as many as 551 universities from 30 countries and territories were ranked Times Higher Education, while in 2020, it was 500 universities.

As the first modern university established and one of the two national universities in Vietnam, Vietnam National University, Hanoi (VNU) has undergone various stages of development: the University of Indochina established on 16 May 1906; Vietnam National University (November 1945); the University of Hanoi (June 1956). In December 1993, VNU was reorganized on the basis of amalgamating the University of Hanoi and some other leading universities in Hanoi.

VNU is the largest comprehensive higher education and research center in Vietnam. VNU is entrusted with the task of producing highly qualified human resources and talents for the industrialization and modernization of the country. VNU holds a special position in Vietnam’s higher education system, operating according to a special regulation promulgated by the Prime Minister.

Viet Nam National University Ho Chi Minh City (VNUHCM) was founded on January 27th, 1995 according to the Government’s Decree No. 16/CP on the basis of the merger of nine universities into eight members. VNUHCM was officially launched on February 6th, 1996.

In 2001, VNUHCM was reorganized according to the Prime Minister’s Decree No. 15/2001/QĐ-TTg (February 12nd, 2001). VNUHCM has its own organizational and operational regulations. Accordingly, VNUHCM is a multidisciplinary, highly qualified and advanced center for post-secondary education and science-technology research activities which plays a key role in the national higher education system and is able to satisfy development needs, according to the Topuniversities website.

At present, VNUHCM consists of seven member units: University of Technology; University of Science; University of Social Sciences and Humanities; International University; University of Information Technology; University of Economics and Law; Institute for Environment and Resources.

Established in 1956, Hanoi University of Science and Technology (HUST) is Vietnam’s first multidisciplinary technical university. It is the industrial engineer training center of the country during building and development processes, and the cradle of high-quality human resources for the country’s modernization and industrialization.

In its early days, the whole University concentrated its efforts on settling facilities for classrooms and laboratories by renovating and buying new equipment; and at the same time, on the development of managerial and teaching staff to prepare basic conditions for the opening of the First Cohort.
