The Met Office has issued a yellow thunderstorm warning for the whole of the UK that will last until Thursday, as temperatures soar to a blistering 36C (97F) in the south east due to high pressure sweeping in from Europe. In addition, flood warnings are in place across Wales, England and Scotland as heavy rainfall threatens to swell rivers beyond their banks, Express reported.

A total of five flood alerts are in place in the West Midlands, while more urgent warnings near Lancaster in the North West require immediate action, the Government’s flood information service has said.

Caroline Douglass, Flood Duty Manager at the Environment Agency, said: "Heavy thunderstorms across the Midlands and the north-west of England could lead to surface water and river flooding in some communities. Isolated flooding is also possible more widely across England today through until Thursday due to further heavy thunderstorms.”

The flood warning service adds properties around Burrow Beck in Lancaster are “expected” to be affected by any flooding that does occur, and river levels are expected to rise until 6am this morning. Residents there are advised to move valuable objects to safe places and off the ground.

Scotland, meanwhile, has issued 19 flood alerts – though no warnings are in place at the time of writing.

All this is despite sweltering temperatures expected tomorrow as the UK battles heatwave conditions.

London will simmer as temperatures rocket to 37C in the capital – not far off the highest temperature ever recorded in Britain.

All this is despite sweltering temperatures expected tomorrow as the UK battles heatwave conditions.

London will simmer as temperatures rocket to 37C in the capital – not far off the highest temperature ever recorded in Britain.

Tuesday day time will see temperatures rise once again, despite the threats of scattered thunderstorms.

However, there will be a cooler breeze coming in from the North Sea which could bring some low cloud cover or even fog to coastal areas across the east of Scotland and northern England.

Some coastal towns will see temperatures much lower than in other parts of the UK – Tynemouth is expected to sit at around 22C for much of the afternoon.

Wednesday will see similar temperatures – 21C being around the minimum for much of the country – though London should be slightly cooler.

There will be scattered thunderstorms too, with the potential to break out unpredictably. These will again bring the possibility of heavy rain, lightning and hail.

The highest temperature ever recorded in the UK is 38.7C, and was measured in July 2019 in Cambridge Botanic Garden.

Tropical, uncomfortable night-time temperatures will become more common with climate change, Met Office said.

On August 12

According to Weather Online, a rather wet start across much of Scotland, with heavy showery rain affecting the north and northeast, before clearing from the west through the day with sunny spells developing behind.

Elsewhere, many places starting dry although with showers, some potentially heavy and thundery, across northwest England and down eastern English coasts, particularly the southeast corner. Further thunderstorms develop later over England and Wales, these locally bringing very heavy rain. Highs at 18C in northern Scotland, 34C in southern England.

Europe's weather forecast

BBC Weather has warned of severe thunderstorms and flash flooding across parts of Europe as the heatwave continues to rage.

Forecaster Chris Fawkes said as we go through the week central Europe will see thunderstorms. As the heatwave rages on in Europe, more rain and heavy downpours can be expected. He added these heavy downpours could result in localised flooding.

Mr Fawkes said: "The heatwave is set to continue for much of this week across north-west Europe."

"Temperatures will be running into the mid-highs 30s widely. But widely we are starting to see some thunderstorms break out in that heat and humidity. Really that is the nature of the forecast through the rest of the week."

Mr Fawkes went into detail of these thunderstorms and where they would likely occur in Europe.

He said: "It is hot and humid, some sunshine but with some big thundery downpours. Those storms are back again across parts of France and perhaps a few developing across the United Kingdom. Some of them could be heavy enough to bring some localised flash flooding."

In southern eastern Europe it is expected to remain dry with few areas experiencing any rain over the next few days.

The BBC Weather forecaster said: "In south-east Europe it is a dry picture with plenty of sunshine here as well. Temperatures will be running into the low to mid-30s. Heavy showers will develop across parts of central Europe to watch out for Tuesday as well."

"Otherwise you can see the extent of the hot weather, 34C in Frankfurt and 31 in Berlin. Some areas will see temperatures into the high 30s."

The areas most likely to see the hottest of the European heatwave weather are north France, Belgium, Netherlands and Germany.

As we move through the week, the showers will become more frequent for countries in central and western Europe.

Mr Fawkes said: "On Wednesday it is another day of sunshine and showers. The showers become a little more widespread in nature. As I say, there is a risk that some of these heavy storms could bring some localised flash flooding."

On August 12

Heavy and thundery showers will become confined to northern parts of Spain as well as northern parts of Portugal. Dry and fine elsewhere. A few thundery showers across the Balearics in the morning but should become dry and fine later on. Largely dry and fine across Italy, Sicily, Sardinia and Corsica. A largely dry and fine day for Greece and Turkey, Weather Online reported.

Thundery, heavy showers affecting northern and western regions of France through Wednesday. The Low Countires should remain dry until the evening. Germany looks to be mostly dry although the far south could see some showers.

Showers, some heavy and thundery developing through the day across Switzerland and Austria and moving into Hungary and Croatia. Other largely dry today across much of eastern Europe.

High pressure weakens slightly on Wednesday to allow for possible showers to develop rather widespread across Norway, Sweden and Finland but plenty of dry conditions too. The further north the better the conditions. Dry and fine through the Baltic States and Denmark.
