UK and Europe weather forecast latest, December 9: Temperatures plummet below freezing with threat of snow showers
UK's weather forecast
Temperatures across the UK are set to plummet below freezing with an increased threat of snow showers from this evening. According to BBC Weather, the UK will continue to be engulfed by "cold air from Greenland" before a new weather system closes in from the Atlantic later this week. BBC Weather's monthly weather outlook said: “December has started cold and unsettled. Some of us have already seen the first snowfall of this winter, including lowland parts of eastern England. This has been due to a combination of low pressure areas deepening over the UK, along with cold air from Greenland sweeping down across the country."
“It will stay pretty cold for next week or so, with some locally sharp frosts and also further sleet and snow showers over the hills in the north and west.”

According to weather maps produced by WXcharts, northeast Scotland is set to be the worst affected with up to 4cm of snowfall overnight. The wintery conditions could also spread southwards with a 50 percent chance of snow in central and southern parts of Wales by the early hours, according to NetWeather.TV snow risk radars.
Netweather.TV forecaster Jo Farrow said: “After dark, it will be wet and windy for Scotland, particularly in the north and east with snow over the higher ground. A covering for the Cairngorms and a few centimetres for the Trossachs and Southern Uplands with coastal gales and a wild night in the northerly flow for northwest Scotland.”
Overnight temperatures will remain below freezing for large parts of the country, with lows of -1C in Scotland and 0C for northern and southern parts of England. Strong winds combined with an area of low pressure will result in temperatures feeling more like -4C, according to WXcharts.
By Tuesday afternoon it will remain bitterly cold for the whole of the UK with just highs of 4C in the south, 5C in the north and 4C in Scotland by 3pm. Along with the cold snap, the Met Office has issued two weather warnings over the next 24 hours.

Unsettled conditions will also bring a band of heavy rain and the threat of flooding for the northeast of Scotland with a yellow warning in place from 6pm until 9pm on Tuesday night. Further south, the cold-air has triggered a yellow fog warning for London and the southeast from 4pm until 11am on Tuesday morning.
Ms Farrow added: “There are flooding concerns from this rain for eastern and northeast Scotland, hence the yellow warning."
“With lighter winds elsewhere, again there will be fog and frost forming. Showers feed around the low, so wet for exposed parts of Northern Ireland, western Scotland, Isle of Man and shower pushing inland for northwest England and Wales with wintriness for the hills and mountains."
“Contrasts across the UK with another quiet day for southeast Britain with calm conditions, lingering fog, frost and then brighter even sunny skies in places."
“Whereas northwest UK has strong gusty winds, downpours and iciness. By the middle of the week, the cold front will continue with the threat of frost and ice."

Met Office forecaster Marco Petagna said: “Winter hazards are dominating the weather as the emphasis changes from snow to frost and ice. The UK will stay in cold air north of the jet stream.”
The BBC forecast from Monday, December 7 to December 13 says the area of low pressure will move away, increasing the chances of frost, before another band of cold and wet conditions come in from the Atlantic.
The forecast reads: “A calm, dry and cold spell is expected during the middle of next week, as low pressure areas move away, leaving a temporary high pressure ridge. There is a chance of a locally sharp frost. From Thursday and Friday onwards, new Atlantic fronts will move in and bring an increase in cloud, wind and rain.”
Leading bookmakers have even slashed odds on this month to go down as the coldest December on record.Coral's Harry Aitkenhead said: “We're headed for a big freeze up until January now and it means this December is odds on to go into the record books as our coldest ever."
