UK's weather forecast

According to Express, temperatures have plunged below freezing this week, sparking snow showers and wintry conditions across the UK. Forecasters expect the chilly temperatures to linger over the next two weeks, bringing winter gales, snowfall and icy rain.

The start of next week will be characterized by cold and wet conditions with snow expected in the north of the UK. By 9 am on Monday, December 7, weather charts show temperatures will struggle to rise above freezing for much of Britain, with temperatures as low as -5C expected in Scotland.

Snow is expected to fall across Scotland and northern England on Tuesday night, with Netweather’s snow risk chart indicating up to an 85 percent risk of snowfall. Up to 2 inches (5cm) of snow is forecast in Scotland and the northeast at 3 am on Saturday, December 12, according to charts by The Weather Outlook.

Maps by Netweater and WXCharts also forecast snow showers in the north of the UK over next weekend. Scattered snowfall is expected over the following week for the north of the UK, according to the latest weather maps.

WXCharts expect Sunday 20 December to see especially high levels of snow, with 5 inches (13cm) of snow forecast. In fact, WX Charts predicts snow somewhere in the UK for the next 17 days straight - with the majority in Scotland or the north of England. On several occasions, however, snow could fall further south.

WX Charts predicts snow in parts of Wales and south of Manchester on December 11. More snow could fall in Wales on December 17 too, the forecasters said. And freezing temperatures will stretch as far as London and the south coast this weekend and early next week.

BBC forecasters credit the wintry conditions to a new area of low pressuring moving in from the east.

They said: “Monday will see a new area of low pressure moving in from the east, introducing extensive cloud cover to northern, central and eastern areas with showers or longer spells of rain, sleet and hill snow moving west."

“Most snow of any consequence will be over the Pennines, Peak District, and eventually southern Scotland. Tuesday has low confidence in the behavior of a new low-pressure system expected to approach from the west. It looks like this will bring rain and wet hill snow or sleet to Wales and England, even possibly in the south of England (more likely sleet than snow here).”

The forecasters said a high-pressure ridge will then start to move in from Wednesday, causing dry, chilly weather and the chance of showers along the east of the UK.

A weather map by WXCharts shows the weather front approaching from the east on Tuesday. Met Office meteorologists agree that unsettled conditions will characterize the second half of next week. They said: “There will be a steadily increasing chance of more widespread unsettled weather, bringing cloud, rain, and possibly some hill snow at first, arriving from the Atlantic. The rain, accompanied by strong winds and coastal gales at times, will likely be heaviest in the west, whilst areas further east should remain drier longer."

Showers could become wintry on high ground, and perhaps at lower levels. BBC forecasters say it is too early to predict whether there will be a white Christmas this year, but bookmakers have slashed odds owing to the cold conditions seen of late.

Ladbrokes have odds of just 2/5 on snow falling anywhere in the UK on Christmas Day. Alex Apati of Ladbrokes said: "Things are only going to get colder and while a White Christmas seems inevitable, it's actually more likely that this winter goes down as a record-breaking cold one."

According to Weather Online, weak low pressure generally remains dominant through Monday. Largely dry, however, but with rather a lot of cloud about and some mist and fog patches are possible as winds are slack. Showers are also expected to affect eastern coasts. Best of any sunny spells developing in the west. Rain also possible to affect the far southwest of Ireland where it will also stay mainly cloudy. Staying cold for all. Highs at 2 to 7C.

Europe's weather forecast

Up to 150cm of snow is also forecast to fall across Central Europe this weekend as an area of low pressure moves in from the Atlantic, BBC Weather forecaster Chris Fawkes warned. Mr Fawkes warned of torrential rainfall and heavy snow across central and west Europe this weekend. He forecast 150cm of snow will fall across mountains in Austria.

He said: "Low pressure is bringing cold air, mounting rain and heavy snow across much of central and western Europe at the moment. This cold outbreak is seeing some heavy snow moving into the north of Spain, particularly above 800m elevations."

According to Weather Online, rain continues to affect northwestern and northern parts of Spain as well as western parts of Portugal on Sunday. This turns to snow over the mountains. Dry and fine elsewhere across Iberia. Very heavy rain and thundery downpours spread east across the Balearic Islands, Corsica, Sardinia, Sicily and Italy, reaching the Balkans later. Staying dry and bright ahead of this for eastern Greece and Turkey.

Rather cloudy for France with patchy outbreaks of rain, sleet and snow over western and eastern areas. Mostly cloudy too for the Low Countries and Germany with an area of wintry precipitation arriving from the south over western Germany and Benelux later. Further heavy snowfall is expected over the Alps while Poland, Hungary, the Czech Republic and Slovakia remain rather breezy and cloudy. The best of any sun over eastern Poland.

Cloudy for Denmark with patchy rain over northwestern areas. Bright and breezy for the Baltic States. Breezy too for Finland and Sweden with wintry showers spreading northward through the day. Early snow fades over Norway to leave a mostly dry but overcast day here.
