Right in front of Ha Phat church, the southern province of Bien Hoa stands a 35 meter tall Christmas tree constructed from 2,340 conical hats – the national symbol of Vietnam. Its largest radius spans for 12.5 meter.
Each conical hat is tagged with a bauble and a small light bulb.
According to Mr. Nguyen Van Han, head of Ha Phat church, the priests in the church have planned to erect such Christmas tree since October and finished erecting on December 6. Up to 10-30 workers join the construction work every day.
This is the thrid year Ha Phat church built this so-called conical-hat Christmas tree. The older version in 2018, however, was only 25 meter in height. All implementation fee has been funded by local people.
A large number of conical hats are reused from previous years as they are still intact.
“We only use one support pillar for the tree. Thus, the priests have thoroughly designed every detail”, Han was quoted by PLO as saying. “The original idea belongs to a church in Nghe An, however, it was not very tall. Ours is way taller”.

He added that Ha Phat church initially planed to make the Christmas tree only 10 meters tall. However, they heightened it upon request from local people.
Last year, the special conical-hat Christmas hat garnered over 10 thousand visits in one night. Many people were from distant provinces, including Long An, Can Tho, Lam Dong. The church had to mobilize 40 people to maintain law and order in the area.
“Local people are very supportive of us building the tree. Everyone takes pride in the unique tree that upholds cultural values of Vietnam”, Han said.
This year, Ha Phat church plans to turn on the lights on the special Christmas tree for 10 days starting December 17.
