U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo met Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc at the Government Office this morning, October 30, as part of his two-day official visit to Vietnam.
The visit aims to celebrate the 25th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries and reaffirm the strength of the U.S.-Vietnam comprehensive partnership and their shared commitment to a peaceful and prosperous Indo-Pacific region, reported the saigontimes.
Vietnam is one of Pompeo’s stops during his Asia trip. He had previously attended the U.S.-India 2+2 Ministerial Dialogue in New Delhi and visited Sri Lanka and Indonesia.
Pompeo affirmed the US’s strong commitment to further promoting such relationship in a deep and stable manner in the near future.
He thanked the government, the US State Department and Secretary Pompeo personally for supporting a strong, independent and prosperous Vietnam, as well as the development of the Vietnam - US relations.
He also expressed his thanks to President Donald Trump and the US government for their practical and timely support to Vietnam in responding to the recent COVID-19 pandemic and floods in the central region.
The Vietnamese leader welcomed the two sides’ continued efforts to effectively implement the action plan towards a harmonious and sustainable trade, while emphasizing the strategic scope of energy cooperation in bilateral relations, including increasing LNG imports from the US.

He also affirmed that Vietnam is committed to creating an open and transparent investment and business environment for businesses from countries, including the US, to operate efficiently in the long term in the country.
Both host and guest shared positive reviews on the results of the Indo-Pacific Business Forum that took place in Hanoi on October 28-29.

The US Secretary appreciated the signing of commercial contracts worth billions of US dollars at the forum, which he said contributed to boosting harmonious and sustainable trade ties.
He affirmed that the US supports ASEAN’s central role in Southeast Asia, and wishes to promote the ASEAN-US strategic partnership, as well as the Mekong-US partnership to develop substantially and effectively, according to the VOV.
Pompeo also held a meeting with Vietnamese Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Pham Binh Minh and met Minister of Public Security To Lam.
Pompeo and Minh earlier spoke via phone on August 6 to discuss the U.S.-Vietnam relationship and regional and international issues of mutual concern.
Minh said in a statement that he believes the U.S.-Vietnam comprehensive partnership will record greater achievements in the time to come. “Our shared resolve and joint action for mutual benefit will surely take us far,” he said.

Minister To Lam, on behalf of the Vietnamese Ministry of Public Security, welcomed and thanked the US Secretary of Sate for spending time visiting Vietnam officially and working with the Vietnamese Ministry of Public Security. This meeting shows the importance of the US Department of State and the Secretary of State to the Ministry of Public Security of Vietnam in promoting cooperation between two countries in the field of security, further deepening the Vietnam-US Comprehensive Partnership, contributing to the 25th anniversary of Vietnam-US diplomatic relations by creating a foundation to consolidate and promote strategic trust.
