Fansipan Mount, also known as the “rooftop of Indochina” was cloaked in white snow as the strong cold spell hit the northern Vietnam mountains.
In the early morning of January 11, many places in the North recorded the temperature below 9 degrees Celsius. Mau Son Peak (Lang Son), Dong Van and Meo Vac Towns (Ha Giang), Y Ty Commune, and Sapa Town (Lao Cai) were engulfed in white snow.
The temperature in Sa Pa Town plunged to -0.8 degrees Celsius. The area from Tram Ton Pass to the top of Fansipan experienced a snowfall.
The snow combined with drizzle made Sa Pa more romantic. Many visitors were mesmerized at the “European scene”.

However, with the local residents who have to live with the snow, there was no excitement. The snow has inflicted many difficulties and losses for them.
The freezing weather condition has stopped thousands of students from attending school.
In many localities, farmlands and roads have been blanketed in snow and frost, making it impossible for people to go out and work, according to VNExprees.
The extreme weather phenomenon has also killed hundreds of animals and hectares of crops.
To minimize losses, farmers have been asked to take their cattle to lower places to shelter from snow and frost, feed them with hot soup, and cover crates carefully.

A “Europe-like” scene that is rarely seen in a tropical country like Vietnam.
Vietnam typically encounters a tropical climate with annual average temperatures ranging from 22 to 27 degrees Celsius. But the northern highlands have received frost and snow every winter in recent years. According to the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, the northern region is expected to enter a period of dry cold, mild sunshine, and low humidity. But snow still lies several centimeters thick in many areas. Vietnam has experienced a colder winter than usual this year as the Pacific Ocean sea surface temperature drops, forming the La Niña phenomenon, weather experts said. The country should expect up to 27 waves of cold air coming from the north this winter, a typical average. |
