The Vietnam-Cuba Friendship Association held a conference to review the work of 2021 and tasks for 2022 on January 20.

The Association also assessed the results of the activities in the past year and determined strategic goals for the future.

Vietnam and Cuba's friendship becomes stronger

The special friendship, trust and attachment between the two countries has been consolidated and enhanced, reflected in the phone calls of the two countries' senior leaders and bilateral cooperation.

During Covid-19, the two countries carried out important, practical and mutually supportive activities.

The two sides cooperated closely in removing difficulties for bilateral economic-trade relations, maintaining a stable rice supply to Cuba, and supporting Cuba to develop agricultural production.

Cuban senior leaders have talked about cooperation on the Covid-19 vaccine with Vietnam.

The two countries' high-level leadership agreement in October 2021, means Cuba has provided Vietnam with 5 million doses of Abdalda vaccine.

Plans for providing 5 million doses of vaccine to children are also being considered.

The two countries will continue to transfer technology for vaccine production in the near future.

Speaking at the conference, the leader of the Vietnam-Cuba Friendship Association Vu Hai Ha said that in 2021, the delegation exchanges had difficulties due to Covid. However, the Association continued to maintain activities of support with the Cuban people in various forms.

The Vietnam Union of Friendship Organizations (VUFO) and the Vietnam-Cuba Friendship Association organized the first online conference with the Cuban Institute for Friendship with Peoples (ICAP).

The conference shared information on the situation in Cuba, before and after the policy of opening the border, the return to a new normal state on November 15, 2021 as well as expected activities in 2022.

Strengthening relations

In 2022, the Covid-19 pandemic is forecast to decrease, as global vaccination rates have increased and antiviral drugs become available.

With achievements in research and production of vaccines, Cuba will soon control the pandemic, bringing economic, cultural and social activities back to normal. However, Cuba will continue to face difficulties in restoring the country, economy and cultural exchanges.

The new context poses new tasks to the Association. The Association will bring activities to the localities, work with branches, businesses, schools and research institutes.

The Association also enhances the participation of individual members and organizations of the Association in peace, solidarity and friendship with Cuba.

Vietnam-Cuba Friendship Association's Orientations in 2022
VUFO Vice President and General Secretary Phan Anh Son suggested that the Vietnam-Cuba Friendship Association expand partnership with Cuba.

Vice President Phan Anh Son suggested the Association expand its partnership with Cuba. He said cooperation often focuses more on commemorative activities, holidays and national days, instead of economic cooperation and cultural exchange.

He also said that there is a need for more young people in the Association.

"The Association needs to cooperate with universities and the Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union Central Committee to organize programs and activities to educate the tradition of friendship between Vietnam and Cuba. Thereby, it helps the new generation, young Vietnamese citizens love and understand Cuba more," he said.

Vice President Phan Anh Son awarded the Certificate of Merit of VUFO to Assoc. Prof. Nguyen Viet Thao for his outstanding contributions to the Association's activities.

The 13th Party Congress of Vietnam has once again reaffirmed the role of people-to-people diplomacy.

As one of the three pillars, people-to-people diplomacy needs to change and renew itself to meet the Party and State's new expectations and requirements for VUFO in the work of solidarity, peace and friendship.

The VUFO Presidium held a meeting to organize the work last year, identifying 2021 as a pivotal year and a turning point in people-to-people diplomacy.

The VUFO also awarded emulation flags and certificates of merit to the collectives and individuals of the Vietnam-Cuba Friendship Association for their outstanding achievements.
