Vietnam's daily Covid-19 infections hit new record of 9,225

Vietnam confirmed 3,950 domestic Covid patients in 27 localities Saturday night, pushing the day's tally to a new high of 9,225 cases as the country's two biggest cities tightened restrictions.

Of the night's tally, HCMC recorded 3,326 cases, followed by its neighbors Binh Duong (262), Dong Nai (99) and Ba Ria-Vung Tau (63), cited VnExpress.

Other localities recording new infections are the Mekong Delta's Dong Thap (46), Can Tho (23), Ben Tre (9), An Giang (7), Hau Giang (3), Ca Mau (2) and Bac Lieu (2); the central provinces of Binh Thuan (31), Dak Lak (24), Binh Dinh (12), Ninh Thuan (8), Phu Yen (5), Quang Ngai (4), Dak Nong (4), Quang Nam (3), Lam Dong (2), Nghe An (2), Gia Lai (1) and Thua Thien Hue (1); Hanoi (4) and the northern provinces of Vinh Phuc (3), Ha Nam (2) and Ha Giang (2).

The cases registered on Saturday include 1,288 cases detected in Long An Province between July 14 and 22 in isolated areas.

A total of 6,797 cases of the day were detected in quarantine zones and areas under lockdown while 2,428 were detected in the community with unclear sources of transmission.

Both Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh city, Vietnam's two biggest cities, have been imposing tougher social distancing restrictions which will be in effect for at least 15 days in the capital starting from Saturday and until at least August 1 in the southern metropolis.

The national Covid-19 tally since the new wave started late April has reached 87,141, recorded in 62 of 63 localities.

Shippers not allowed in Hanoi amid social distancing: transport department

Hanoi's transport department said Saturday the city would not allow shippers to operate amid a Covid-19 social distancing order as they could be "hard to control" and may spread the coronavirus.

Vu Van Vien, director of the municipal Department of Transport, said that people won't be able to order from supermarkets and convenience stores as well.

"The city still allows businesses that provide essential supplies, so for now, people would go buy the things they need themselves," he said, adding that the department would monitor the situation and discuss with the People's Committee to adapt to different scenarios, Thanh Nien newspaper reported.

Postal workers and supermarket staff can perform their deliveries but their employers have to register lists of specific individuals with the transport department and receive approval.

Regarding the ride-hailing services, Vien said authorities would provide specific instructions for them in the future.

Hanoi on Friday announced a 15-day social distancing order starting 6 a.m. Saturday amid rising coronavirus concerns in both the capital and nationwide. Chairman Chu Ngoc Anh said the citywide order is being issued under Directive 16, which comprises the country’s most stringent social distancing regulations, requiring residents to stay home and only go out for basic necessities such as buying food or medicines or to work at factories or businesses that are allowed to open.

People must keep a distance of at least two meters. No more than two people can gather at public places apart from workplaces, schools or hospitals. Daily online medical declaration is required.

Trade centers, supermarkets, traditional markets and wholesale markets in the city will only sell essential items. Funerals cannot gather more than 20 people. The majority of public transportation will be shut down and there will be no travel to other localities.

HCMC prepares for 80,000 Covid patients scenario

HCMC, epicenter of the ongoing outbreak, is preparing to add more public hospitals for Covid treatment or mobilize private hospitals as the number of infections tops 80,000.

The municipal Department of Health has categorized Covid patients into five groups: those being asymptomatic and having no underlying diseases, those with mild symptoms, those with moderate and severe symptoms, those with underlying medical conditions or suffering comorbidities prior to Covid-19, and critically ill patients, reported VnExpress.

In case the number of infections crosses 80,000, the city would turn existing infrastructure into specialized facilities for receiving and treating Covid-19 patients based on these five groups.

Quarantine facilities in all 21 districts and Thu Duc city would receive 40,000 of the first group, who are asymptomatic and have no underlying diseases, but have been found infected with the virus through rapid testing.

The city would arrange at least one doctor and two nurses to care for every 50-100 patients in this group.

For those with mild symptoms, the city would prepare 21,600 beds at field hospitals. For every 25 patients there would be one doctor and two nurses.

There will be 8,000 beds to treat patients with moderate and severe symptoms and having underlying medical conditions. For every 20 patients, there will be one doctor and two nurses.

Patients with underlying medical conditions or suffering comorbidities prior to infection would have access to 6,400 beds. One doctor and two nurses would be responsible for every 10 patients.

Covid-19 resuscitation hospitals with around 4,000 beds would be responsible for treating critically ill patients. One doctor and two nurses would take care of every five people.
