Vietnam Promotes Cooperation with UK, Hong Kong and Lithuania

On the sidelines of the OECD forum, Minister Bui Thanh Son had a meeting with the UK Foreign Secretary, the Hong Kong’s Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development and the Foreign Minister of Lithuania.

On June 7, on the sidelines of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) forum in Paris, Foreign Minister Bui Thanh Son had meetings with the UK Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs James Cleverly, Hong Kong’s Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development Algernon Yau Ying-wah and Lithuanian Foreign Minister Gabrielius Landsbergis.

Talking to UK Foreign Secretary Cleverly, Minister Bui Thanh Son expressed his delight at the positive developments in relations between the two countries in many fields. He suggested the two sides promote high-level delegation exchanges.

Son wished that the UK Government will continue to support Vietnam in finance, technology and capacity building within the framework of the Just Energy Transition Partnerships, contributing to Vietnam's strong commitments at the COP26.

UK is expected to continue to coordinate and support Vietnam to successfully assume the role of Co-Chair of the OECD Southeast Asia Regional Program, with priority given to promoting economic recovery, supporting the economic reform process, and helping Southeast Asian countries move closer to OECD standards.

At the proposal of Minister Bui Thanh Son, UK Foreign Secretary Cleverly expressed his appreciation for the important role of Vietnam in the region.

Clevery appreciated Vietnam's economic achievements, considering Vietnam a potential market for UK investment. He affirmed that the UK wishes to further deepen cooperation with Vietnam, especially in the fields of security defense, green economy, and renewable energy.

In the context of the two countries celebrating the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations, the two sides agreed to develop measures to continue promoting cooperation in all fields, serving the goals of sustainable development and effectively responding to regional and global challenges.

Meeting with Director of Hong Kong's Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development Algernon Yau Ying-wah, Minister Bui Thanh Son expressed his delight at the positive progress in exchange and cooperation, especially in economy, trade, and investment between Vietnam and Hong Kong in recent years.

Hong Kong is currently the 7th largest trading partner and the 5th largest FDI investor of Vietnam. Vietnam is also the 7th largest trading partner of Hong Kong and 2nd among ASEAN countries.

In order to strengthen and create favorable conditions for bilateral economic and trade cooperation, Minister Bui Thanh Son suggested that the two sides strengthen the exchange of delegations between government agencies, localities, businesses, and people.

He suggested that Hong Kong create more favorable conditions in the process of granting entry visas to Vietnamese citizens and businessmen, pilot the acceptance of Vietnamese workers to work in Hong Kong, and encourage Hong Kong's large corporations and enterprises to participate in trade and investment promotion activities in Vietnam.

Minister Bui Thanh Son also suggested that Hong Kong increase imports of Vietnamese agricultural products, seafood, textiles, and footwear, and support Vietnamese enterprises to promote trade, investment, and tourism in Hong Kong.

Hong Kong's Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development Algernon Yau Ying-wah expressed his impression of Vietnam's economic achievements in recent years.

Algernon Yau emphasized that Hong Kong's large enterprises appreciate the business and investment environment in Vietnam. They want to approach and find opportunities in Vietnam, including new fields such as technology and innovation.

He affirmed that Hong Kong is ready to play the role of a gateway for Vietnamese businesses to invest and do business effectively in the Greater Bay Area (Hong Kong-Macau-Guangdong).

Also on June 7, Foreign Minister Bui Thanh Son had a short exchange with Lithuanian Foreign Minister Gabrielius Landsbergis.

The two ministers appreciated the positive developments in the relationship between the two countries over the years and agreed to continue working closely to promote the exchange of delegations and contacts at all levels.

The two sides effectively maintained bilateral cooperation mechanisms, including the political consultation between the two foreign ministries, and continued to support each other at multilateral forums and international organizations.
