Speaking at the “Vietnam Furniture Matching Week” programme, Nguyen Chanh Phuong, Vice Chairman and General Secretary of the Ho Chi Minh City Handicraft and Wood Industry Association (HAWA), said despite the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, the domestic timber industry has made progress.

The country’s forestry export turnover reached 13.17 billion USD last year, up 16.4 percent year-on-year, and exceeding the yearly target of 5.4 percent.

The sector expects to earn 14 billion USD from timber and forestry exports this year, Phuong said, suggesting more attention to productivity, product value, as well as social and environmental sustainability.

Given the pandemic spread, he urged domestic firms to optimise technologies and digital transformation, and diversify methods for approaching customers.

Echoing Phuong’s views, Duong Thi Minh Tue, a member of the HAWA’s executive board, said to sustain exports, firms must routinely make efforts to retain customers and search for new markets

March and April are the peak order period when major furniture fairs are held in Asia. However, the pandemic has caused the fairs to be cancelled, and businesses need to make the most of trade promotion channels, both online and offline, to reach out to buyers.

Digitalising exhibitions and business matching is the most effective option today, according to Tue.

The “Vietnam Furniture Matching Week” programme will take place from April 12-19, aiming to connect Vietnamese manufacturers with thousands of international customers.

The highlight of the event will be Furniture Sourcing Day in HCM City on April 14, bringing together more than 300 domestic and foreign manufactures and partners, with big names like Kingfisher, IKEA, Ashley, Rowico, Target, Carrefour, Test Rite, Trade point, and MADE.COM.

An online exhibition and B2B matching event will be held on the HOPE platform (www.hopefairs.com) to introduce 100 Vietnamese producers to global buyers, with nearly 10,000 products.

A series of webinars with in-depth analysis of some key markets such as the US, the UK, the Republic of Korea, Germany, and Canada will also be held.

HAWA launched the HOPE (HAWA Online Platform for Exhibition) last year to connect furniture suppliers with global buyers at a time when many trade fairs and exhibitions were postponed or cancelled due to the pandemic. /.
