In nine days from April 7 to 18, the club opensed first phase funding for Cuba's fight against COVID-19.

The first round of funding has mobilised VND 768,4 million raised from 456 donors

President of the club of Vietnamese alumni once studied in Cuba Tran Thanh Dong said, this number will continue to increase and will be updated by the Club Executive Committee. The campaign is expected to last until April 25.

Speaking to Vietnam Times, on behalf of the club of Vietnamese alumni once studied in Cuba, Dong said that, from the early years of the Cuban Revolution, the country had received and trained more than 1,000 undergraduates and graduates, who then went on to become key officials of Vietnam, over one decade before Vietnam was victorious in the resistance war against the US.

Since 1961, Cuba had received the first group of Vietnamese students and then thousands of students in various fields. In 1967, almost 500 Vietnamese youths went to study in Cuba, including the very first female students.

Dong stressed that Vietnamese students would never forget the Cuban people's sincere and affection for the Vietnamese people, adding that they hopes to take on some responsibility in supporting the country to tide over this emergency.

Confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Cuba surpassed 1,000 on April 19 with 34 deaths, according to the country's Ministry of Public Health.

Cuban health authorities said 2,266 suspected cases remain in medical centers while 255 former patients have been discharged from hospitals.

The Cuban government estimates that the island nation will have its peak of COVID-19 by the first half of May with nearly 4,500 confirmed cases expected in the worst-case scenario.

Vietnam donates rice to Cuba to fight pandemic

Ealier, Vietnamese on Friday had a new gesture of solidarity towards Cuba by donating 5,000 tons of rice to help them solve the food difficulties amid the fight against the novel SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus.

Acting under the empowerment of Vietnamese Party and State leaders, Minister of Construction Pham Hong Ha just handed over the token of the 5,000 tonnes of rice to the country's Ambassador Lianys Torres Rivera.

Ha, who is also Chairman of the Vietnam Sub-Committee of the Vietnam - Cuba Inter-governmental Committee, said the Party and Government of Vietnam greatly appreciate the timely support of their Cuban counterparts in COVID-19 prevention and control, adding Vietnam is also ready to provide medical supplies as relief aid to support Cuba.

After expressing gratitude for the material and moral support from Vietnam, Cuban Ambassador Lianys Torres pointed out that this is one more among the countless gestures of friendship by the Vietnamese Comunist Party, State and people in almost 60 years of the diplomatic relations between both countries.
