When Vietnam undergoes the fourth Covid outbreak, the Vietnamese community in Australia has been supporting the fight against Covid in Vietnam and helping people struggling due to the pandemic in various ways.

Most recently, Vietnamese children aged 7 – 11 in Sydney and their families have held an online concert to raise funds for the homeland.

By Oct. 9, the online concert to assist the Covid fight in Ho Chi Minh City had garnered AUD 7,532, equivalent to VND 125 million, from many philanthropists in Australia and Vietnam.

This amount of money will be used to purchase food and necessities for families struggling due to Covid and medical equipment for treating Covid-19 patients in hospitals in Vietnam. Specifically, AUD 500 (VND 7.3 million) will be used to buy food to support locals in Dak Lak province who are facing challenges brought by Covid.

Discussing the idea to hold the online concert, Khoi Anh, mother of Alice (10) and Lucy (7) who took part in the concert, said even though they were living far from home, Khoi Anh and her friends closely follow the latest update about the Covid-19 pandemic in Vietnam in the past months, especially in Ho Chi Minh City.

Empathizing with and hoping to share the difficulties and loss with people in Vietnam affected by the pandemic, particularly children, many Vietnamese families in Australia, including Khoi Anh’s, have joined efforts to donate and support homeland in different ways.

Through the concert, Khoi Anh expressed her hope that Alice and Lucy would learn to care about the people around them and be ready to support others when needed. Further, she hoped that the concert would help to tighten the bond between her children and homeland.

Previously, in June 2021, the Embassy of Vietnam in Australia, the Consulate General of Vietnam in Sydney and the Consulate General of Vietnam in Perth sent letters to the Australian Vietnamese and Vietnamese living in Australia to convey the call for support for the Covid fight in Vietnam from the Central Committee of Vietnam Fatherland Front to overseas Vietnamese.

Responding to the call for support from the Fatherland Front, many associations, businesses, students and communities of Vietnamese in Australia and New Caledonia islands, a sui generis collectivity of overseas France in the southwest Pacific Ocean, have been directly sending donations to the relevant authorities and charity groups in Vietnam and organizing activities to raise fund in different forms, such as marathon, book and photo auction and holding policy advocacy campaigns to call for Covid vaccine donation for Vietnam from the Australian government.

In August, Chairman of Realms Company Justin Bui connected donors to send rice bags to armed forces and officials in Ho Chi Minh City through the city’s Committee for Overseas Vietnamese, with the hope to encourage the forces in the fight against the Covid-19 pandemic.
