From 2013 to 2019, the State Committee for Overseas Vietnamese under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs worked with the Department of Continuing Education under The Ministry of Education and Training to provide training courses on teaching Vietnamese to approximately 300 Vietnamese teachers abroad to become core groups for the overseas Vietnamese teacher community.

In 2020 – 2021, due to the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has not been able to hold these training courses as planned. In late 2021, the ministry will collaborate with the Ministry of Education and Training to hold online courses to meet the needs of Vietnamese abroad and improve the teaching quality and professional competencies of Vietnamese teachers abroad in delivering Vietnamese lessons using the Ministry of Education and Training’s programs.

The training course will focus on methodologies to teach Vietnamese based on the textbooks developed by the Ministry of Education and Training, incorporating lessons on the history, traditions and cultural identity of the Vietnamese people, introducing the country and people of Vietnam and the comprehensive innovation of the country.

The course will consist of two classes, delivered every Saturday and Sunday.

The first class will be for overseas Vietnamese teachers in Asia and Australia. The class, tentatively held from Oct. 9 to 24, will include 12 sessions, with four sessions per week taught in the morning and afternoon.

The second class will be reserved for Vietnamese teachers in Europe and North America, tentatively held from Oct. 30 to Dec. 12, 2021. The class will have 12 sessions with two sessions per week delivered in the afternoon.

The course will be held online with about 25 – 30 students per class. It is intended for non-professional teachers and volunteers who can speak, read and write Vietnamese fluently, who are teaching or plan to teach Vietnamese to overseas Vietnamese and who have not joined the training in the previous years. Participants who complete the course will receive a certification of completion issued by the Vietnam Ministry of Education and Training.

The training course on teaching Vietnamese will not only provide knowledge about the Vietnamese language and improve professional competencies and modern Vietnamese teaching methodologies but will also contribute to preserving and developing the Vietnamese language, culture and traditions, connecting the Vietnamese community abroad with the homeland. Through the course, the position and strengths of the overseas Vietnamese language teacher community will be enhanced, thereby preserving and nurturing the Vietnamese culture across the world.
