The Lunar New Year Festival is one of the two largest annual events organized by the Vietnamese Family Partnership (VFP) in Deptford, London. This year, the 2025 Year of the Snake celebration on January 26 attracted hundreds of overseas Vietnamese and locals, especially families with young children.

The festival provided an opportunity for attendees to prepare for Tet with a wide variety of traditional specialties. Decorative flowers and plants, including chrysanthemums, peach blossoms, apricot flowers, and kumquats, were also available.

The event also featured an exhibition showcasing a proposed symbol representing the Vietnamese community in Deptford, home to the largest Vietnamese community in London. This VFP initiative aims to raise awareness and enhance the visibility of the Vietnamese diaspora. The project is expected to be completed by the end of this year.

Quynh Giao, the founder of VFP, emphasized that the Tet Festival is one of VFP's key activities to promote and preserve Vietnamese cultural heritage. She expressed hope that the festival would strengthen community bonds, and pass on traditional values to younger generations.

Vietnamese Ambassador to the UK, Do Minh Hung, praised VFP's efforts in organizing meaningful events like the Tet Festival, which help preserve national cultural traditions. He affirmed that the Party and State consider overseas Vietnamese an integral part of the nation, and have implemented various policies to support them, fostering national unity and contributing to Vietnam's development. Ambassador Hung reiterated the embassy's commitment to accompanying Vietnamese associations in the UK in their activities, promoting a united and strong community that contributes to both the host country and the homeland.

UK Member of Parliament Vicky Foxcroft expressed her delight at attending the 2025 Lunar New Year celebration. She commended VFP's initiatives, such as Vietnamese language classes, lunch clubs, and community support services, highlighting VFP as a testament to the Vietnamese community's success in the UK. She emphasized that while governments work for positive national change, local communities like the Vietnamese play a vital role in making a difference at the grassroots level.

Over the past two decades, the community Tet Festival organized by VFP in Deptford has celebrated Vietnamese cultural values, fostered community solidarity, and promoted Vietnamese culture in the UK.

As in previous years, the event featured traditional Tet dishes, folk games, and cultural performances. Highlights included lion dances, and performances by both Vietnamese children and Russian students studying Vietnamese, creating an atmosphere filled with pride and hope for the new year.

The program also marked the 75th anniversary of Vietnam-Russia diplomatic relations (January 30, 1950 – January 30, 2025), reinforcing the traditional friendship between the two nations.
