Vietnamese doctors adopt world’ unprecedented technic to save foetus

Instead of suspending the pregnancy, Vietnamese doctors decided to break with convention to keep the 24-week fetus, whose mother suffered a uterine rupture.

Tran Thi Van Anh, 21, who was at 24 weeks of pregnancy but had a very low level of amniotic fluid had been suggested to suspend the pregnancy earlier. The fetus had developed normally and weighed around 600 grams at the time his mother was hospitalized.

When the mother was received by Hanoi Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital, the doctors concluded that she suffered uterine rupture leading to the leak of amniotic fluid in the womb. After long medical consultations, Director of the hospital Assoc.Prof.Dr. Nguyen Duy Anh decided to conduct a technic that has never been utilized in the world that injecting fluid into the uterine to save the fetus, under the approval of the mother’s family.

Besides, the mother was provided the best medicines that help protect her health, avoid the infection, and keep the baby’s normal growth.

The fetus was kept in the abdomen for five more weeks until the 31st week when she weighed around 1.5kg and showed no more signs of growth. As a result, doctors performed a cesarean section that successfully save both the mother and baby. Until now, the newborn has been treated with bili lights due to jaundice and will be discharged from the hospital soon.

Uterine rupture is a rare, but serious childbirth complication that can occur during vaginal birth. However, it is very rare for a mother who suffers the complication to keep her childbirth.

Prof. Nguyen Duy Anh shared that this is the achievement of fetal intervention - one of the highest techniques of obstetrics in the world that can save the pregnant’s life and preserve the uterus. In particular, the fetus is provided enough time to grow and born healthily.

What are the symptoms of uterine rupture?

According to Healthline, a variety of symptoms are associated with uterine ruptures. Some possible symptoms include excessive vaginal bleeding, sudden pain between contractions, contractions that become slower or less intense, abnormal abdominal pain or soreness, the recession of the baby’s head into the birth canal…

What causes uterine rupture?

During labor, pressure builds as the baby moves through the mother’s birth canal. This pressure can cause the mother’s uterus to tear. Often, it tears along the site of a previous cesarean delivery scar. When a uterine rupture occurs, the uterus’s contents — including the baby — may spill into the mother’s abdomen.

What are the risks of uterine rupture?

A uterine rupture can be a life-threatening complication of childbirth for both the mother and the baby.

In the mother, uterine ruptures can cause major blood loss or hemorrhage. However, fatal bleeding due to uterine rupture is rare when it occurs in a hospital.

Uterine ruptures are usually a much greater health concern for the baby. Once doctors diagnose a uterine rupture, they must act quickly to pull the baby from the mother. If the baby isn’t delivered within 10 to 40 minutes, it will die from a lack of oxygen.
