Vietnamese students bag gold medals at Int’l Olympiad of Metropolises

Gold medals belonged to Nguyen Hoang Nam and Tran Quang Vinh in Physics, Nguyen Duy Anh and Nguyen Le Thao Anh in Chemistry, and Do Bach Khoa in Mathematics, Vietnamnet reported.
Nguyen Duc Anh won silver medal in Mathematics, while Nguyen Gia Bao and Nguyen Anh Quan claimed bronze medals in Informatics.
In addition, the whole team won the silver cup and ranks in the top 5 best cities in the category of blitz-contest.
The competition consists of a blitz-contest and two main rounds.
The Olympiad of Metropolises (IOM) is an international team competition which is held every year in Moscow at the initiative of the Mayor of Russia’s capital city. Contestants are students aged 14 to 18, who live in the biggest metropolises in the world. They are to show their knowledge of physics, chemistry, mathematics, and informatics.
IOM was first organized in 2016 with the participation of 22 teams from 18 countries. By 2019, it drew the participation of 45 cities from 32 countries. In 2020, due to the impacts of the Covid-19 pandemic, the competition was virtually held in many locations with the support of telecommunications technology.
Last year, the Vietnamese team obtained outstanding results in their first time competing in the Olympiad of Metropolises, with three golds, three silvers, and two bronzes.
Previously, on 28 September, all six Vietnamese students competing at International Mathematical Olympiad 2020 won medals including two gold, one silver, two bronze, and one Certificate of Merit. With these achievements, the Vietnamese team ranked 17th among 105 countries competing at the competition. On September 24, all four Vietnamese students also claimed medals including one gold at the International Informatics Olympiad 2020. Generally, the Vietnamese team ranked 9th among 87 countries taking part in the contest. |
