Vietnamese students rank second at 2020 International Chemistry Olympiad

All four Vietnamese students competing in the International Chemistry Olympiad 2020 in Turkey won gold medals, which is the highest-ever result gained by the Vietnamese team so far.

With four medals, the Vietnam team ranked second behind the US team, announced the Ministry of Education and Training’s Quality Management Department on July 31.

Four students in the team are Ly Hai Dang, a 12th grader from Hai Phong city’s Tran Phu High School for the Gifted; Nguyen Hoang Duong, an 11th grader from the Natural Science High School for Gifted Students under Hanoi National University; Pham Trung Quoc Anh, a 12th grader from the Phan Boi Chau High School for the Gifted in central Nghe An province; and Dam Thi Minh Trang, a 12th grader from northern Nam Dinh province’s Le Hong Phong High School for the Gifted.

Ly Hai Dang scored 97 out of 100 points and ranked fifth out of 231 students. Nguyen Hoang Duong scored 94 points and ranked ninth, Pham Trung Quoc Anh scored 92.5 points and ranked 15th and Dam Thi Minh Trang scored 91.12 scored and ranked 22^nd, according to the VOV.

The 52nd International Chemistry Olympiad was held in Turkey amid the complicated development of COVID-19; therefore, all students had to take remote access exams. Vietnam joined the network at the Hanoi National University of Education under a strict monitoring system of the organizing board.

This year’s competition has attracted the participation of contestants from 60 countries globally.

Vietnam participated in the International Chemistry Olympiad for the first time in 1996, held in Russia, and won three bronze medals and a consolation prize.

At the 2019 International Chemistry Olympiad organized in France, Vietnam won two gold medals and two silver medals. Tran Ba Tan ranked fourth and was named as the most outstanding student with a perfect score, reported the Vietnam Plus.

In 2018, the Vietnam team won a gold medal, two silver medals, and a bronze medal.

All of the medalists are sixth grade students of Tran Dai Nghia Secondary School for the Gifted in Ho Chi Minh City.
