VUFO takes flexible measures to fulfill political tasks in 2020
The Vietnam Union of Friendship Organisations (VUFO) adopted flexible measures to complete its assigned political tasks in 2020, contributing joint efforts in fulfilling the dual goals of containing the COVID-19 pandemic and maintaining socio-economic development, promoting Vietnam’s image to the world and cultivating international friendship and cooperation.
Enhancing solidarity, friendship, cooperation with international friends, partners
VUFO President Nguyen Phuong Nga highlighted the union’s efforts in consolidating and enhancing the solidarity, friendship and cooperation with people of other countries, international friends and partners.
Vietnamese people’s organisations have optimised IT strength and promptly shifted from in-person activities to online ones or combined them together in order to maintain and foster relations with friends.
Big events were celebrated successfully in the year, like the 70th anniversary of the Vietnam-China diplomatic ties, the 70th anniversary of the Viet-Xo Friendship Association/the traditional day of the Vietnam-Russia Friendship Association and the 70 anniversary of the Vietnam-Russia diplomatic ties, along with the 25th anniversary of the Vietnam-US diplomatic ties, the 60th anniversary of Vietnam-Cuba diplomatic ties, the 70th anniversary of diplomatic ties between Vietnam and certain Eastern European countries, and the 45th anniversary of the Vietnam-Germany diplomatic ties, among others, according to the VUFO President.
The people’s organisations have also responsibly participated in multilateral organisations and mechanisms, actively contributing to the success of Vietnam’s ASEAN Chairmanship and pushing ahead with the building of a cohesive and responsive ASEAN Community.
Apart from activities launched by the Ho Chi Minh Youth Union Central Committee, the Vietnam Women’s Union Central Committee, and the Vietnam Union of Science and Technology Associations, the VUFO successfully organised the ASEAN People’s Forum 2020 in the form of a teleconference.
With the theme of “Southeast Asian People’s Solidarity for an Inclusive, Cohesive and Responsive Community,” the forum brought together thousands of delegates, with 20 workshops on 11 major topics.
It also adopted a joint statement that matched Vietnam’s interests and met the interests shared by people in the region.
People-to-people cooperation in COVID-19 pandemic combat
Nga also emphasised the VUFO’s people-to-people cooperation activities in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.
The people’s organisations have played an active role in informing international friends about the pandemic combat in Vietnam and shared the country’s experience in this regard.
The VUFO and its members collected nearly 1 million masks, thousands of medical supplies and more than 10 billion VND (435,000 USD) in cash to support foreign friends in the fight.
The VUFO and people’s organisations have made active contributions to the country’s success in the pandemic combat, and affirming the superiority of socialism as well as the consensus between the Government and people, Nga said.
People-to-people diplomacy has remarkably supported Vietnam’s health care diplomacy, while playing a part in consolidating and strengthening the friendship with people of other countries, and promoting Vietnam’s prestige and image as a safe destination for tourists and investors.

Mobilising aid from foreign non-governmental organisations
Moreover, the VUFO has well performed its role in mobilising foreign non-governmental aid, Nga said, adding that despite the complex developments of COVID-19, foreign non-governmental organisations contributed nearly 250 million USD to support Vietnam.
More than 6.5 million USD was raised for the pandemic fight, and up to 55 foreign NGOs and the PCP data centre sent letters to Vietnamese leaders, lauding sound guidelines adopted by the Party and the State in the combat.
Besides, 42 foreign NGOs provided financial aid for flood-hit localities in the central region, with the total funding amounting to 9 million USD.
Achievements in external information service
In the year, media units of the VUFO published dozens of thousands of articles, photos and video clips for external information service, Nga said.
They regularly provided information about the Party and the State’s policies on foreign relations, the pandemic situation, and the country’s socio-economic development.
Apart from accurate information about Vietnam’s sea, island and border sovereignty, they also gave insight into democracy and human rights in the country, the VUFO President continued.
They helped to promote people-to-people exchange, solidarity and friendship between Vietnamese and people of other countries.
Notably, with the six languages of Vietnamese, English, Chinese, Russian, Lao and Khmer, the Vietnam Times has provided diverse information in a timely manner, attracting an increasing number of readers, she said./.
