Coming to the summit with a clear goal, Vietnam is targeting carbon emission neutrality by 2050, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh said on Nov 1, joining scores of countries that have pledged to halt emissions by mid-century or thereabouts to stop global warming. The worldwide reaction favorably towards the speech of PM Pham Minh Chinh, saying that Vietnam is among the countries that show strong determination and embark a roadmap to achieve its goals.

Vietnamese PM spoke about how responding to climate change and restoring nature must become the highest priority in all development policies and the highest ethical standard for politicians at all levels, industries, businesses, and people, etc. According to VnExpress, Vietnam’s view on fairness and equality of all countries joining to solve global warming issues also makes a great impression at the summit. Vietnam had leveraged the transformation toward a green, circular economy with several renewable energy accomplishments over the last three decades but there is still more to be done, said PM.

The UK embassy in Vietnam was especially impressed by the speech PM made at the summit, as seen on the embassy’s Twitter post the following day. The post not only mentioned the speech but also remarked it as pioneering, influential and highly constructive to solving global warming issues.

According to Reuters, Minister of Industry and Trade Nguyen Hong Dien spoke at a roundtable as part of COP26 sidelines and added that Vietnam aims to reduce coal-fired power generation. To do so, the minister proposes cut down the reliance on coal and double wind power generation. This is included in Vietnam’s roadmap to join other countries that have committed to halting emissions by mid-century to cope with global warming. As reported by the Financial Times, Vietnam is not the only country that set ambitious goals, however, our roadmap is among the most specific and attainable ones. Other countries with such ambitious goals include India with net-zero carbon emission by 2070, and Brazil with cutting down carbon emission by halt by the end of the 2020s.

This year’s most critical climate summit, COP26 is the first major test of the 2015 Paris Agreement. When countries negotiated this, they agreed to limit the rise in global average temperature to well below 2C and pursue efforts to not exceed 1.5C above pre-industrial levels. According to the New York Times, all countries must commit to cutting emissions faster and deeper and there is also an expectation that wealthy countries will significantly increase financial support to help the most vulnerable nations adapt to the impacts of warming and build economies that don’t depend on fossil fuels.
