Yagi Aftermath: International Community Rallies Behind Vietnam

International partners, foreign friends, and humanitarian organizations worldwide have taken action to support Vietnam in addressing the damages caused by typhoon Yagi.

Emergency Relief Aid

On September 12, the South Korean Embassy in Vietnam announced that the South Korean government had decided to provide to humanitarian aid worth US $2 million (nearly VND 50 billion) with the hope of contributing to the restoration of the affected areas and helping the residents of these areas return to their normal lives as quickly as possible.

Previously, the Australian government had declared an initial aid package of AUD 3 million (about 49 billion VND) for Vietnam, which includes efforts to support humanitarian aid, emergency relief supplies, and other essential services to address the damage caused by Typhoon Yagi . The first batch of emergency relief supplies arrived in Hanoi on the evening of September 11.

The US Mission to Vietnam, through the US Agency for International Development (USAID), will provide US $1 million (about VND 24 billion) in emergency humanitarian aid to support Vietnam in overcoming the damages.

The US aid will be allocated to humanitarian relief partners to provide cash, shelter, clean water, and other support beyond food, contributing to the disaster relief efforts directed by the Vietnamese government, which are being urgently implemented promptly.

On the morning of September 9, Pauline Tamesis, United Nations Resident Coordinator in Vietnam, expressed her deep sympathy to those affected by the typhoon.

She noted that specific organizations would be responsible for addressing various issues. The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) will focus on children's needs, and the World Health Organization (WHO) will assist with medicines and disease control.

Silvia Danailov, Chief Representative of UNICEF Vietnam said that an initial amount of US $300,000 has been mobilized to support vulnerable groups, including the elderly, children, and ethnic migration.

The organization is also prepared to provide clean water and sanitation for 2,000 households and supply essential goods, medicines to prevent infectious diseases, and cash to affected families.

, UNICEF is assessing damage to the infrastructure of 700 schools in areas impacted by the storm, including mental health and psychological well-being issues.

International Friends Stand by Vietnam

General Secretary of the Lao People's Revolutionary Party Central Committee (LPRP) and President of Laos Thongloun Sisoulith and Lao Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone on September 9 sent messages of sympathy to General Secretary and President of Vietnam To Lam and Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh over heavy losses in human and property of the Vietnamese people caused by typhoon Yagi.

In the message, the leaders of Laos expressed their belief that, under the leadership of the Party and Government of Vietnam, the fraternal Vietnamese people will overcome all difficulties, and the lives of people and localities affected by the natural disaster will soon stabilize and return to normal.

Chairman of the National Assembly of People's Power Esteban Lazo sent his condolences to the families of flood victims in Vietnam.

Australian Ambassador to Vietnam Andrew Goledzinowski expressed his deepest sympathy to the Government and people of Vietnam for the losses caused by the natural disaster.

"Australia highly appreciates the effective leadership of the Vietnamese government in coordinated relief and emergency response efforts in the affected areas. We are ready to support Vietnam in the recovery and reconstruction process," said the Ambassador.

US Ambassador to Vietnam Marc Knapper also extended his deepest condolences to families of flood victims who were severely affected by the typhoon.

The Ambassador affirmed that the US stands in solidarity with Vietnam's disaster response efforts and is working closely with Vietnamese government counterparts to assist in immediate response efforts and the recovery of Vietnam.
