Can Tho City Celebrates Ties with Laos

Can Tho will organize a series of events to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Vietnam and Laos.

The Union of Friendship Organizations of Can Tho City on March 2 had a working session with the city's Vietnam - Laos Friendship Association to discuss the plan to organize a series of commemorative activities commemorating the Vietnam - Laos, Laos - Vietnam Solidarity and Friendship Year 2022; the 60th founding anniversary of diplomatic relations (1962-2022), and 45 years since the signing of the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation between the two countries (1977-2022).

At the meeting, the delegates heard the plan of Can Tho City People's Committee. Accordingly, Can Tho will organize a series of specific activities such as: sending congratulatory messages on the occasion of Lao National Day and the 60th anniversary of establishing diplomatic ties; organizing meetings, cultural exchange, exhibition, research contest about the history and relations of the two countries; and releasing publication on bilateral friendship.

The activities aim to contribute to enhancing mutual understanding, and boosting the solidarity between the two countries in general, between Can Tho City and localities and partners in Laos in particular. At the same time, promoting the image of Can Tho city as dynamic, rich in potential, active and proactive in international integration; strengthening the friendship and understanding of the Can Tho people towards Laos and vice versa, and expanding opportunities for business exchanges and connection between the two sides.

At the meeting, the members of the executive committee of the friendship association reached a high consensus and made contributions in the process of implementing the activities in the proposed plan.

Le Thi Thanh Giang, president of Can Tho Friendship Union appreciated the preparation and coordination to organize a series of diplomatic events of the Vietnam - Laos, Laos - Vietnam Solidarity and Friendship Year 2022 to celebrate the 60th founding anniversary of diplomatic relations, and 45 years since the signing of the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation between the two countries.

Giang acknowledged the contributions of the delegates to the plan, and noted that in 2022, there will be many important event, marking the relations between Vietnam and the people of other countries, including Laos.

She also expressed her hope that the member associations, especially the city's Vietnam - Laos Friendship Association will continue to try and better promote their roles and responsibilities to fulfill assigned task.

Can Tho Union will continue to accompany the friendship association as well as its member friendship associations to carry out activities of practical significance, promoting solidarity and friendship between the people of Can Tho and people of other countries, Giang affirmed.

The President of Can Tho Friendship Union hopes that the activities will be successful and effective as desired, contributing to consolidating, strengthening and promoting to the great friendship, special solidarity and comprehensive cooperation between Vietnam - Laos.

With 209 valid projects worth nearly USD 5.18 billion in Laos, Vietnam remained the third biggest investor in the country, behind China and Thailand. Last year, there were five new Vietnamese projects and four others registering additional capital with a total registered capital of USD 112.84 million, up 27% annually. Around USD 2.5 billion was disbursed, or 48.4% of the total.

Over the past five years, the Vietnamese firms have contributed more than USD 1 billion to the Lao State budget and roughly USD 80 million to social welfare services.

Two-way trade was estimated at USD 1.3 billion last year, up 30.3% year-on-year.

The Vietnam – Laos Bilateral Trade Agreement, which was signed in 2015 and took effect till October 2020, has been extended to October 2023.
