The CERC Award is a prestigious award given by the Canadian Government. Awardees are leading experts who create groundbreaking research for Canadian universities. At this year's CERC, 34 scholars were awarded, along with research grants of two levels, CAD 4 or 8 million CAD (about US $3-6 million).

This year, Vietnamese professor Duong Quang Trung was the awardee with the highest grant. Trung is currently teaching at Memorial University (Newfoundland, Canada) and a visiting professor at Queen's University of Belfast (UK). His CERC grant of CAD 8 million is also the highest grant any scholar had received over the past 8 years.

According to the CERC organizing committee, this grant aims to assist Trung in researching the challenges of next generation communication technology, after 5G networks. It includes solving problems such as large numbers of devices, high requirements for security, accuracy and capacity.
