Sa Mu Peak is located more than 100km from Son La city, on the border between Son La and Yen Bai provinces, in the Ta Xua special-use forest - an extension of the Hoang Lien range to the South. Since tourism has not been developed much, the natural landscape here is still quite pristine.

For more than a year, Sa Mu has been one of the peaks that most attract trekkers to conquer in the Northwest, thanks to its unique beauty and diversity of forest ecosystems, especially the magical moss forest.
The allure of its mysterious and enchanting primeval forest, adorned with unique vegetation along the trekking route, has piqued the interest of countless nature enthusiasts.

From Hanoi, tourists will travel more than 200km to Ta Xua commune (Bac Yen district, Son La province), then arrive at the climbing starting point about 20km away. According to the guides, visitors should go by car to the Ta Xua area the night before to rest and start climbing early the next morning.
The Sa Mu peak trekking route will lead the tourists through a large forest with plants such as moss, rhododendrons, maple leaves, and many streams and waterfalls. The vegetation in the forest changes with altitude and mountain slope direction.

At 2,000 meters above sea level, an air of mystique envelops the surroundings as ethereal fog descends upon the ancient forest. As visitors draw closer to the peak, the winds grow stronger, the temperature gradually drops, and the atmosphere becomes increasingly humid. During winter, the harsh climate can bring temperatures as low as minus two degrees Celsius.
The Sa Mu trekking route has different beauty in each season, captivating the hearts of many travelers and trekkers coming here.
From September to November, maple leaves turn red and yellow, creating a poetic scene. March and April every year is the season when azalea flowers bloom brilliantly. In the forest, there are also many large ancient trees with strange shapes, and moss-covered all year round. Visitors can combine trekking and cloud hunting on Sa Mu Peak.

December to February is the best time to hunt clouds at the mountain peak. On clear days, standing on Sa Mu, tourists can also see two famous peaks of Yen Bai province, Ta Xua and Ta Chi Nhu.
Sa Mu climbing arc has a total length of 15-20 km, depending on the climbing direction. Visitors will weave through small streams and old forests with ancient trees of all shapes and sizes.

Sa Mu is one of four peaks in the Northwest where tourists can have a relaxing camping overnight and admire both sunrise and sunset. It is also one of the 5 high peaks in the Northwest (including Ta Chi Nhu, Lao Than, Ngu Chi Son, and Lung Cung) with a marvelous 360-degree view.

Canh Mo (Mo Soup) is a distinctive delicacy of the highland ethnic communities. This dish is commonly served during the Tet holidays of the Kho Mu people. The main ingredients include minced dried rodents, birds, or squirrels. To elevate the flavors, the meat is mixed with banana flowers, aromatic herbs, chili, mac khen (a type of wild pepper), and glutinous rice, then cooked in bamboo tubes, resembling bamboo rice.

Tourists can also try braided beef. This distinctive dish is originally from the Northwest mountains. But the most famous of all is the braided beef of Sơn La. The beef is sliced, marinated with spices, and then smoked with the aroma of wood from trees grown on the rocky mountains. When it is finished, the smoky aroma is still lingering, infusing into each piece without causing any discomfort.
