Speaking at the ceremony, Director of the Vietnam's Department of Economic Relations and Science and Technology, State Committee for Overseas Vietnamese (SCOV) Pham Viet Hung said that teaching and learning Vietnamese has long been an essential need of the Vietnamese communities living aboard to preserve the mother tongue.

In particular, this is an urgent task set by the Party and State for the authorities to promote and improve the effectiveness of Vietnamese language preservation activities abroad. This task will also contribute to popularizing Vietnamese guidelines, policies, and culture with international friends, contributing to strengthening the "soft" power of the country.

Hung said that the SCOV has coordinated with the Vietnam Educational Publishing House and Vietnamese representative agencies abroad to provide a Vietnamese bookcase that enhances support for Vietnamese language teaching and learning. The project has introduced Vietnamese books to community libraries and built Vietnamese corners in many countries like Japan, Qatar, Slovakia, Austria, and Belgium.

He stressed the remarkable effort to implement the project with modest resources. In the first year, the project implementation provided thousands of books and bookshelves to build Vietnamese bookcases overseas, demonstrating the concern and responsibility for Vietnamese people in general and Vietnamese language work in particular.

"Hungary is the first among the European countries to launch the Vietnamese Bookcase in the project on "Honoring the Vietnamese Language in the overseas Vietnamese community in 2023." It is because of the strong and speedy development and spread of the Vietnamese language teaching and learning movement here. People always care for each other and look towards their homeland. Also, bringing the Vietnamese bookcase here is made possible by the tireless effort of the team at the Vietnamese Embassy in Hungary," Hung said.

The launch of the bookcase will particularly make an important contribution to the young generations of overseas Vietnamese. It will help improve their knowledge of Vietnamese, to remember and gain a better understanding of the homeland and its thousand-year-old heroic history and rich cultural traditions.

The bookcase provides a selection of Vietnamese language teaching textbooks, guidebooks, story books, poetries, bilingual Vietnamese literature references, and supplementary materials. Books about many topics like literature, history, society, education, and Vietnamese culture are also available. With a good management mechanism, it will gain easier access for the Vietnamese community in Hungary in particular and the Vietnamese community around the world to honor, preserve, and promote the purity and value of the mother tongue.

Besides the launching event, the delegates of SCOV also held working sessions with the Vietnamese Association in Hungary. The two sides discussed organizing art troupes to Hungary on special occasions of the holidays and New Year celebrations and creating more favorable conditions for granting citizen identification cards to Vietnamese people in Hungary.
