Flood in Central Vietnam: Global leaders extend sympathy following devastating floods, landslides

China’s Premier Li Keqiang on October 22 sent a telegram to Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc upon informed of the severity of the recent flood that struck Vietnam’s central provinces, report of the Vietnam Ministry of Foreign Affairs reads.
Also on October 22, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and Singaporean Foreign Minister Vivian Balakrishnan sent telegrams expressing their condolences to those affected by consistent floods and landslides in the central strip.
Dr Balakrishnan said he was “very saddened by the tragic loss of lives and devastation caused by the floods and landslides in central Vietnam” in a letter on Thursday (Oct 22) addressed to Vietnam’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Pham Binh Minh.
“Please accept my deepest condolences to the families of the victims, and to all those whose lives and livelihoods have been affected,” he said in the letter.
“Singapore stands ready to support Vietnam in whatever way we can.”

Earlier on October 19, General Secretary of the Lao People’s Revolutionary Party and President of Laos Bounnhang Vorachith also offered his sympathies to Party General Secretary and State President Nguyen Phu Trong over the sufferings Vietnamese central people were facing. As reported by the Vietnam Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Leaders from Laos expressed their concerns as the Storm No. 6 and No.7 continuously landed in the central provinces of Vietnam, taking heavy tolls on the local residents and their properties. Lao leaders also emphasized that they would always stand by Vietnam during this difficult time, uphold the tradition of friendship, solidarity, and comprehensive cooperation between the two countries.
Leaders from Thailand, Myanmar also offered condolences to Vietnam.
As of Friday, 117 people have died and 20 others were missing in central Vietnam following weeks of severe flooding and landslides. Among those dead are 22 soldiers who were engulfed in a huge landslide on Sunday in Quang Tri province, and 13 members of a rescue team who had attempted to save workers from a hydropower plant. Over 24,500 houses are still inundated by floodwater, thousands of residents have to evacuate. Roads, infrastructure and crops in the central region had also been devastated by the floods, the charity added, warning that hundreds of thousands of people would need housing and income support in the coming weeks. More rain is forecast to hit the area over the weekend as Storm Saudel blows in from the South China Sea. |
