This is the first activity organized to respond to the project "Day to Honor Vietnamese in the Vietnamese Community Abroad." The goal is to honor, preserve, and spread the mother tongue in the Vietnamese community abroad. The launching ceremony was joined by the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Vietnam, the Head of the State Committee for Overseas Vietnamese Le Thi Thu Hang, and the Vietnamese Ambassador to South Korea Vu Ho.

Speaking at the ceremony, Deputy Minister Le Thi Thu Hang stressed that the first launching ceremony has a special meaning for the Vietnamese community in Korea. It will be replicated worldwide. Hang highly appreciated the efforts of the Vietnamese community in South Korea in spreading the passion for preserving Vietnamese culture and language in recent times.

"Teaching children their mother tongue will help them create a bond with their parents and grandparents," the Deputy Minister said.

In 2022, the Government of Vietnam issued the Project "Day to Honor the Vietnamese Language in the Vietnamese Community Abroad" to promote many activities such as organizing competitions to find language ambassadors among the communities, building bookcases, providing Vietnamese textbooks, and the "Beloved Mother Tongue Gala" program.

Le Thi Minh Phuong, President of the Vietnamese Association in South Korea, expressed her hope that Vietnamese children will not only master their mother tongue but also understand more about Vietnamese culture, history, and traditions of Vietnam through the language programs. Learning Vietnamese also contributes to closer bonds between family members, said Phuong, between Vietnamese families in foreign countries. It contributes to building the Vietnamese community in South Korea, looking towards the homeland and the country.

Language teacher Bui Lan Anh said that the goal of this year's class is to introduce daily life such as family, school, toys, and transportation to children. Through diverse forms such as puzzles, songs, games, and daily communication situations, the program will help children develop language skills and be more passionate about learning Vietnamese.

There are currently nearly 300,000 Vietnamese people living and working in South Korea, of which the number of women married to Koreans accounts for more than 70,000 people. The fact that children were born into a Vietnamese-Korean multicultural family that has a mixture of 2 cultures and 2 languages open great advantages.

Being good at Vietnamese and imbued with Vietnamese culture will help children have more opportunities to develop their own values. Many mothers want their children to be able to speak Vietnamese so that the mother-child relationship will be strong, as well as help them understand the culture of their motherland.

Language is also a means to contribute to spreading national cultural identity to international friends. In particular, not only Vietnamese people but also more and more foreigners want to learn Vietnamese to come to live and work here.

Teaching and learning Vietnamese abroad still faces many challenges. For example, families are not really interested in teaching Vietnamese to their children, there is a shortage of qualified teachers, no teaching locations for the community, and a lack of equipment and textbooks.

For many years, the Vietnamese Association in South Korea has continuously organized annual Vietnamese classes and also implemented language competitions in the community to diversify activities that spread the love and passion for learning and preserving the Vietnamese language to the community, especially the youth.
