International Day of Yoga to be Held in 16 Vietnam's Cities, Provinces

The 8th International Day of Yoga (IDY) will be celebrated on June 21. On that day and in its run up, the Embassy and the Consulate General of India will be partnering with various cities/provinces of Vietnam to mark this important occasion.

The Embassy and the Consulate General of India in Ho Chi Minh City are partnering with local authorities to organize IDY 2022 celebrations in 24 cities and provinces of Vietnam.

A curtain-raiser event was held by the embassy in partnership with the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha on May 29 at the Tam Chuc pagoda in Ha Nam province.

The event at Hanoi will be held on June 18 at Hoan Kiem. The theme for this year’s International Day of Yoga is “Yoga for Humanity”.

Yoga - a symbol of Indian culture and history - has been billed as ensuring the Vietnam - India friendship and comprehensive strategic partnership has continued to thrive over recent years.

Last weekend, the International Yoga Festival was organized in the central city of Da Nang from June 11-12 by the Embassy of India in collaboration with the Da Nang city, Vietnam - India Friendship Association and Da Nang Union of Friendship Organization.

The event was also part of the series of events commemorating the 75th anniversary of India's Independence as Azadika Amrit Mahotsav and the 50th anniversary of India-Vietnam diplomatic relations. More than 1500 Yoga lovers participated and practiced yoga in the event.

Yoga, which is on the Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, has been practiced by many Da Nang people as a way of improving physical and mental health.

The International Yoga Festival - Da Nang 2022 drew the participation of more than 1,500 yoga practitioners from 60 centres and clubs in the city and neighbouring Thua Thien-Hue and Quang Nam provinces. It was as an outstanding event within Vietnam - India people-to-people exchanges in the central region.

In Thanh Hoa City, Indian Embassy in partnership with Thanh Hoa People’s Committee and the Vietnam Yoga Federation celebrated the 8th International Day of Yoga on June 11 with the participation of more than 300 professional yoga practitioners demonstrating the rising popularity of Yoga in Vietnam.

The event was celebrated along with Indian cultural performances, screening of Indian films as well as photo-exhibition on India-Vietnam relations.

For the past nearly two years, due to the global pandemic situation, the Embassy of India had been mostly promoting Yoga and Yoga-related activities online.

In 2020, when Vietnam was successful in containment of Covid-19, a large-scale event was organised by the Embassy in collaboration with the Quang Ninh People’s Committee to mark the 6th International Day of Yoga at the UNESCO world heritage site at Ha Long Bay. In 2021, however, the International Day of Yoga was fully celebrated online.

This year, Vietnam has been chosen by the Government of India as one of the countries falling in the Global Yoga Ring or the Guardian Ring program under which India’s national television broadcaster, Doordarshan will be carrying out live telecast of events, based on their time zones, from all over the world to India throughout the day. For this, Indian Embassy has joined hands with Quang Ninh province to organise this mega event at the iconic Ha Long Bay.

The 8th IDY celebrations hold added significance for both India and Vietnam. This year, India is celebrating 75th anniversary of its independence known as “Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav”. At the same time, India and Vietnam are marking the 50th anniversary of establishment of diplomatic relations.
