From the beginning of 2020 until now, many organizations and collectives made constant efforts to protect Vietnam’s most vulnerable groups against the rapid global spread of Covid-19.

The New Zealand Embassy in Hanoi is working with the Vietnam General Confederation of Labour (VGCL) to provide immediate financial support for 420 female workers from factories in the northern provinces of Bac Giang and Bac Ninh which have been economically affected by the Covid-19 pandemic, reported VNA.

New Zealand Ambassador to Vietnam Tredene Dobson, on June 28 joined a virtual ceremony to officially hand over the financial package to the workers.

Each worker will be provided with VND 1 million in cash to help cover some of their immediate needs. This initiative aims to mitigate the impacts of Covid-19 among 420 workers in Bac Giang and Bac Ninh, whose jobs and incomes have been affected by the recent Covid-19 outbreak.

“This project demonstrates the strong partnership between New Zealand and Vietnam,” said Ambassador Dobson. “This project is a practical initiative to help ease the economic impacts of Covid-19 on the workers and their families. I am proud to say that through the Head of Embassy’s Fund, we have been able to support around 3,000 women throughout Vietnam impacted by Covid-19 in the last 12 months.”

Since April 27, 2021, the fourth wave of Covid-19 has affected many provinces and cities across Vietnam. Bac Giang, Bac Ninh and Ho Chi Minh City are among the most impacted localities. As a result, more than 9 million workers in Vietnam have lost their income and many families have fallen into economic hardship.

In Bac Giang alone, almost 200,000 workers have been off work, of whom 67,000 faced difficulties as they resided in locked-down areas or quarantine sites.

Since the middle of June, Saigon Children’s Charity has started to roll out the delivery of the Covid backpacks in Bac Giang province. With Bac Giang being all the way in the north and was under total lockdown at the time, it was not an easy job to distribute these packages. However, all 330 packages have been delivered to impoverished households, even in the remote areas of the province thanks to BASF Vietnam, Hoang Long Hoan Vu, PremierOil, and many individual donors.

In this fiscal year 2021 (from October 2020), in Binh Chanh District of HCM City, besides usual communication activities to guide people on how to protect themselves against the virus spread, World Vision Vietnam has also provided suitable livelihood support solutions to improve the economic life of households with extremely difficult circumstances.

In addition, during the pandemic's outbreaks, necessities have also been promptly delivered to people to address their most basic and urgent needs. Up to now, World Vision Vietnam has distributed 3,066 bars of soap, 46,350 antibacterial and medical masks, 258 bottles hand sanitizer, 450 rice bags of 5kg, 150 boxes of instant noodles, 600 milk cartons, nearly 200 face shields and boxes of medical gloves.

With the total value of the distribution (up to now) amounting to more than US$ 22,250, more than 4,280 people in the organization's three project communes (Le Minh Xuan, Tan Nhut, Pham Van Hai) have benefited from these supports, including more than 258 vulnerable children and 2,171 registered children.

These activities are part of World Vision Vietnam's Covid-19 national response and recovery program. Up to now, more than US$ 1,822,000 has been disbursed to repair the damages caused by the Covid-19 pandemic on people's lives in World Vision Vietnam's project sites nationwide.

Many other foreign group doing bussiness in Vietnam also have been supporting governments of Southeast Asian country to accelerate the purchase of vaccines.

The AEON Group last week has announced that it would contribute VND 25 billion (around US$ 1.08 million ) to Vietnam’s Covid-19 vaccine fund, joining hands with the Vietnamese Government to push back the pandemic.

Samsung donated VND 40 billion (US$ 1.7 million) to the fund, and an additional VND 16 billion (nearly US$ 700,000) to Bac Ninh and Bac Giang, according to General Director of Samsung Vietnam Choi Joo Ho.

The SK Group – the RoK’s third largest group – also contributed US$ 1 million to the vaccine fund. The LG Group presented 1.55 billion Won (US$ 1.37 million) to Hai Phong city, while CJ donated 320 million Won and Shinhan Bank contributed 290 million Won to the fund.
