The Hanoi event formed part of activities marking the 50^th anniversary of the Vietnam-Japan diplomatic ties (1973 - 2023), the 93^rd founding anniversary of the Vietnam Women's Union (VWU) (1930 - 2023) and the 75^th anniversary of the newspaper (1948 - 2023).

The event brought together nearly 300 children, including orphans, children with disabilities due to traffic accidents, those in difficult circumstances, and representatives from 10 SOS Children's Villages in 55 cities and provinces nationwide.

After nine years, Mottainai has become the largest charitable old-item donation program in Vietnam, honoring sustainable lifestyles. It has attracted the participation of over 500,000 people, benefiting nearly 6,000 underprivileged children. The program has received a certificate of merit from the Japanese Embassy, and the Creative Women Award in 2017.

This year, 281 scholarships have been given to disadvantaged children nationwide under the program, each including VND3 million (US$122) and gifts.

At the event, 47 orphans and victims of traffic accidents from 8 cities and provinces received scholarships and gifts, and 10 SOS Children's Villages got VND30 million and gifts each.

VWU President Ha Thi Nga expressed her hope that following the event, a "Mottainai Green Library" will be built at Hoang Ngan Secondary School in Diem Mac commune, Dinh Hoa district, the northern mountainous province of Thai Nguyen.

The ceremony featured a fair, including one booth by Japanese paper folding artist Kazuma Takahashi, who has joined the Mottainai program since 2016. Japanese Ambassador Yamada Takio and Palestinian Ambassador Saadi Salama also visited the fair.
