Over 1.500 South Korean businessmen set to enter Vietnam

Under the plan, around 570 businessmen from 240 companies will start being sent to Vietnam on chartered airplanes Wednesday, according to South Korea's Ministry of Trade, Industry, and Energy.

Through August, South Korea plans to send 1,500 workers to the Southeast Asian nation. All arrivals will undergo mandatory two-week quarantine before heading toward their final destinations.

Last Sunday, 101 South Korean experts, managers, and high-tech workers from Incheon City arrived by charter flight to Phu Quoc, Vietnam’s biggest island in the southern province of Kien Giang, to work for a major business group that has a billion-dollar project there, reported VNExpress.

Last week, the South Korean ambassador to Vietnam, Park Noh-wan, said that South Korean businesses would like quarantine relaxation for experts and executives entering Vietnam for work. He said they wanted the quarantine period reduced from 14 days and even the requirement waived in some cases like people coming for short-term work and for important tasks like investment and signing contracts.

A representative of the Korea Chamber of Business in Vietnam (Korcham) said quarantining costs South Korean businesses money and time as people now have to do a two-week home quarantine in South Korea before flying out to Vietnam and two more weeks upon landing.

The Chairman of Government Office Mai Tien Dung said that Vietnam has carried out the dual target of both developing the economy and preventing the spread of COVID-19. Therefore, the government has taken flexible isolation measures for foreign experts and executives including South Korean. “Vietnam will work closely with countries to overcome difficulties amid the Covid-19 pandemic”, he added.

Earlier, in March, 270 South Korean experts also arrived in Vietnam to work for tech giants such as Samsung and LG.

Since the pandemic broke out, about 4,300 South Koreans have been granted permission to enter Vietnam for work.
