On the afternoon of July 17, at the Presidential Palace, President To Lam received Iain Frew, Ambassador of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland to Vietnam.

At the meeting, President To Lam appreciated the increasingly effective and extensive development of the Vietnam-UK strategic partnership.

Vietnam attaches great importance to strengthening relations with the UK, a country with an important voice in the world, implementing many policies to strengthen cooperation with the region and with Vietnam particularly.

The two countries regularly exchange high-level delegations at ministerial and local levels.

Vietnam and the UK effectively deployed cooperation mechanisms in a variety of fields such as politics-diplomacy, economics, and security-defense, closely coordinated and supported each other at multilateral forums, and international organizations.

President To Lam assessed that trade-investment cooperation, a key area in the two countries' bilateral relations, has achieved positive growth steps under the impact of the Vietnam-UK Free Trade Agreement.

The UK's participation in the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) will contribute to opening up fresh impetus for cooperation in trade and investment cooperation between the two countries. In the context that Vietnam is the coordinator of ASEAN-UK relations, Vietnam will support and promote cooperation between the UK and the region.

In order to promote the good foundation of cooperation between Vietnam and the UK in the coming time, President To Lam proposed that the two sides increase delegation exchanges and contacts at all levels, strengthen cooperation on security and defense, facilitate trade and investment cooperation activities between businesses of the two countries.

He proposed that the UK, as the coordinator of the Just Energy Transition Partnership (JETP) between Vietnam and the Group of Seven (G7), continue to support Vietnam in accessing financial resources, technology transfer, and human resource development to realize the goal of carbon neutrality by 2050.

President To Lam appreciated the results of good cooperation between the two countries in the field of education and training as more Vietnamese students study in the UK, and there are many cooperation programs between universities and educational institutions of the two countries

He hoped that the two sides would continue to implement diverse cooperation activities in culture, tourism and sports to enhance mutual understanding, contributing to the bilateral cooperation.

Ambassador Iain Frew affirmed that the new British Government will continue the foreign policies of the previous Government, focusing on the Indo-Pacific region, giving priority to promoting relations with the ASEAN region, and strategic partnership with Vietnam.

Ambassador Iain Frew expressed his impression of socio-economic development achievements, Vietnam's role in the region and the world as well as confidence in the prospects of cooperation between the two countries.

He affirmed that the UK will continue to accompany and support Vietnam's sustainable development, especially in priority areas of cooperation between the two countries such as education-training, finance, and energy conversion.

The Ambassador emphasized that the UK is committed to working closely with Vietnam to solve common challenges, especially in response to climate change.

The UK is ready to share experiences with Vietnam within the framework of the Just Energy Transition Partnership (JETP).

In terms of cooperation at multilateral and regional forums, Ambassador Iain Frew mentioned Vietnam's perspective on resolving international and regional issues in the spirit of respecting international law and the basic principles of the United Nations Charter and the 1982 Convention on the Law of the Sea. This contributes to ensuring a peaceful and stable environment for countries in the international community.
