On his official visit to Korea, Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc had a meeting with Samsung Group Vice Chairman Lee Jae Yong on November 28.

According to VNA, Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc highly appreciated Samsung investment activities in Vietnam, stating that the Government of Vietnam, ministries and localities all created favorable conditions for Samsung to develop its investment projects in Vietnam.

Samsung Group Chairman Lee Jae Yong said that Vietnam and South Korea have many cultural cohesions, affirming to try their best for Samsung Vietnam to operate successfully and contribute positively in the socio-economic development of Vietnam, thereby contributing to promoting bilateral relations.

In particular, Mr. Lee Jae Yong said that Samsung is developing R&D center in Hanoi, therefore the Samsung leader wishes to receive support from the Government of Vietnam for these activities.

R&D center is expected to go into operation in Hanoi starting 2022. Samsung plans to recruit 3,000 Vietnamese engineers to work there.

Lee Jae Yong said that Samsung needs a lot of high-tech engineers soon. Semiconductor, high-tech screens, smartphones are all being produced to serve market demand, all with high added value.

In response, Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc expressed his pride when Vietnam became the world’s largest phone factory. The Prime Minister hoped that Samsung would make efforts to maintain production and export turnover, maintain a good growth rate, and contribute positively to the socio-economic development of Vietnam.

The Prime Minister also asked Samsung to try to increase the localization rate in production, which is still lower than required. Samsung also needs to support Vietnamese businesses to participate more deeply in the Samsung's value chain, supporting some typical Vietnamese businesses that are capable of supplying Samsung.

Samsung will invest US$300 million to develop a R&D Center in Starlake Tay Ho urban area, in Bac Tu Liem district, Hanoi. The 18-storey project on an 116,000 square metre is expected to start in 2020 and be finished in 2022.

The centre will strengthen the position of Vietnam as Samsung’s strategic hub in the region, and serve as the headquarters of Samsung in Vietnam, said Choi Joo Ho, general director of Samsung Vietnam
