At the meeting to pay a farewell to HCMC People's Committee Chairman Nguyen Thanh Phong after finishing her term in Vietnam, Singaporean Ambassador Catherine Wong said 2020 is a difficult year for diplomatic activities and international cooperation due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Travel restrictions have forced the cancellation of many high-ranking visits between the two countries. The trade exchange has also been adversely affected, Zing News reported.

However, Ambassador Wong stressed that "Ho Chi Minh City's anti-epidemic measures have received praise from the international community", congratulating Chairman Nguyen Thanh Phong for helping the city to stamp out the outbreak as soon as it resurges.

"Despite the long journey until the pandemic is successfully controlled, the way that Vietnam handles it has really inspired the world," the diplomat emphasized.

“The anti-epidemic awareness of all residents is the key to our achievement today. Every citizen is a soldier", Chairman Nguyen Thanh Phong said.

He added that Ho Chi Minh City has striven to attain the dual goal of controlling the epidemic and developing the economy. He also suggested Singapore and Ho Chi Minh City maintain cooperation through online platforms amidst the pandemic.

Ambassador Wong said the bilateral cooperation has remained positive despite the impacts of the Covid-19 pandemic, adding that Singapore’s investment capital has been mainly poured into the Southern City.

The diplomat also congratulated the establishment of Thu Duc City, saying that the project opens up opportunities for Singapore to share experiences and technology in the fields of education, creative entrepreneurship, and smart city management.

Singapore becomes the leading foreign investor of Vietnam in 2020, with a total investment capital of US$9 billion, accounting for 31.5% of the overall.

Ho Chi Minh City ranked first among the country’s 60 provinces and cities in terms of foreign direct investment attraction this year with a total registered investment capital of US$4.36 billion, thereby making up 15.3% of the total.
