Surpass herself – Live her passion

Like many others, Sa Ri was born without health issues, but a fever at age three resulted in the loss of her legs, leaving her unable to walk. As she watched her peers attend school, run, and play, she felt a deep sadness and yearned to join them. Only at the age of nine did she finally get the chance to attend school, yet she struggled with feelings of inferiority throughout her education. Upon completing the 12th grade, her family's financial constraints prevented her from pursuing university education, prompting her to move to Ho Chi Minh City where she enrolled in a vocational program at a center for disabled orphans.

"In that environment, there are many older siblings and friends who are also disabled, sometimes even more so than myself, yet they remain very optimistic and cheerful. Their attitude has inspired me to continue striving," Sa Ri expressed.

Nguyen Thi Sa Ri is presently a member of the Vietnam National Swimming Team.

In 2007, following the completion of an office computer course, Sa Ri sought employment but did not succeed. Subsequently, she was welcomed by the leader of the "Spring Shelter" Club, where she encountered numerous disabled individuals actively engaged in sports, particularly swimming. This experience ignited her passion for athletics.

In discussing her swimming journey, Sa Ri conveyed: "Starting any sport comes with its own set of challenges that require perseverance, but for me, the obstacles were even more substantial. For an able-bodied individual, legs offer balance in the water, something that may be absent for a person with disabilities. Where an able-bodied person might succeed in one try, a person with disabilities could require twice the effort to swim. In the water, when you begin to sink without legs for support, your hands become the sole means to stay afloat."

After just six days of training, she could swim 50 meters, and within three months, she competed in the national competition in Thua Thien Hue, securing three gold medals. This year signified the initial milestone in Sa Ri's athletic journey. In 2010, she received the prestigious Third Class Labor Medal, a highly esteemed honor for any athlete, particularly for an athlete with disabilities, serving as a powerful incentive for her continual efforts. In 2023, she triumphed with a gold medal at the 12th ASEAN Para Games, held as part of the Southeast Asian Games for the Disabled.

Nguyen Thi Sa Ri's swimming journey, marked by numerous difficulties and challenges.

After excelling in sports and earning numerous accolades, she allocated her competition prize money to assist her family in settling debts and reserved a portion for her university tuition fees. "Previously, I was quite pessimistic and seldom mingled with others. But since I took up swimming, not only has my health gotten better, but I've also gained a lot of confidence. Swimming has become essential; it's the catalyst that propels me forward in life," Sa Ri revealed.

Throughout her sports career, she has experienced many highs and lows. There were years filled with significant achievements, yet there were also periods where, despite extensive training, she did not win any medals. The career of an athlete may be brief, but Sa Ri maintains that as long as she remains healthy, she will keep competing.

Free classes for poor students

Not only is she an athlete with many achievements at home and abroad, she is also an inspiration for the will to live, helping poor students in her hometown.

Since 2014, she has resided in Long An with her daughter. By 2016, she began teaching English to her daughter and grandchildren. Her neighbors, impressed by her proficiency in English, wanted their children to attend her classes. Initially, she taught a small group of 5 to 7 children, but the class size expanded to 20. Eventually, she started providing these classes for free. The students came from challenging backgrounds, with many being the children of laborers and scrap collectors who could not afford additional classes like some of their peers.

“During my school days, I struggled with English. Each time the teacher entered the classroom, I was filled with fear. I established this class for students who faced similar challenges and lacked the chance to attend supplementary classes for foundational knowledge. The joy that the students bring when they come here to learn makes me believe that teaching them is also a learning experience for me. I firmly believe that when I offer smiles to others and to life itself, life will surely return the favor with a smile,” said Sa Ri.

Student Vo Tran Bao Ngoc (Phuoc Dong commune, Can Duoc district, Long An) said that Sa Ri not only taught her English and helped her become more confident, but also set an example for students to follow.

The inspiring story of Nguyen Thi Sa Ri was recently featured as the main topic on the VTV1 program "Connecting Love." Vu Phuong Thanh, the Swiss Ultra 2022 champion and representative of Tan Hiep Phat Company, was a special guest on the program. She expressed her admiration for Sa Ri's perseverance and commended the athlete's swimming accomplishments. "The moment of victory was separated by mere seconds in terms of achievement, but it represented a long journey of hard work for Sa Ri," she said.

In conversation with someone who also holds a deep passion for sports and aspires to add value to the nation's athletic endeavors, Vu Phuong Thanh recounted: "The latest challenge I faced was a 500km race through snow and ice, filled with moments of solitude. Over the 10 days traversing such expansive terrain, there were nights when I had to burrow into the snow for rest. During those times, I clung to the words of a fellow participant from the program. 'Thanh, push yourself, endure for those who cannot.' This mantra inspired me to dig deeper, to strive even further."

During the "Connecting Love" program, a Tan Hiep Phat Company representative awarded Nguyen Thi Sa Ri with a significant gift in recognition of her dedication to Vietnamese sports and her continuous inspiration and contribution to the community. Tan Hiep Phat has supported the "Connecting Love" program for six years, celebrating individuals who motivate the community with their resilience and societal contributions. The company has expressed its commitment to persist in its support for the program, aiming to encourage numerous individuals and perpetuate the belief that "nothing is impossible" within the community.

Tan Hiep Phat not only brings love and strength to the challenging lives portrayed in the program "Connecting Love" but also actively participates in community support activities. These include sponsoring 50 children orphaned by Covid-19 until they reach 18, visiting shelters to offer encouragement, providing thousands of scholarships to impoverished students, and engaging in "repaying gratitude" initiatives to assist heroic Vietnamese mothers, as well as visiting and constructing gratitude houses for families with meritorious services.

"For Tan Hiep Phat, business development must go hand in hand with the community," the company's representative affirmed.
