The chief legislator has viewed the meeting as a special occasion when NA deputies learnt about opinions of overseas voters who always look towards their homeland.

“Special meeting with voters”

According to the legislature's portal, Vietnamese in the European nations were delighted to welcome NA Chairman Hue, who is in Austria to attend the fifth World Conference of Speakers of Parliament (WCSP5) in Vienna.

Despite a raft of hardships, Vietnamese expats have stayed united, seriously observed legal regulations of the host countries, and looked towards the homeland through specific actions.

Apart from supporting their host countries in the fight against Covid-19, they have sent gifts home to assist those hard hit by the pandemic.

At the meeting, they raised concern regarding Vietnamese textbooks in Austria, and proposed the Party and the State consider granting the second passport to overseas Vietnamese.

Some suggested that representative of the Vietnamese community abroad should be among the candidates for NA deputies, contributing to the development of the legislature and the country at large.

Chairman of the Vietnamese Association in the Czech Republic Nguyen Duy Nhien approves that the homeland is always in the heart of Vietnamese expats who have taken pragmatic actions to support the country in the face of natural disasters or epidemics.

Echoing Nhien's views, Chairman of the Vietnamese Association in Poland Tran Anh Tuan said Vietnamese associations in Poland and other European countries have raised funds in support of the Covid-19 vaccine fund at home.

Speaking at the meeting, NA Chairman Hue said this is the first trip to Europe by Vietnamese leaders since the new tenure, which demonstrates Vietnam's activeness, proactiveness and responsibility in major consulting forums.

It also aims to enhance and deepen relations between Vietnam and foreign countries, urge European nations to effectively realise the EU-Vietnam Free Trade Agreement (EVFTA) and ratify the EU-Vietnam Investment Protection Agreement (EVIPA), and promote cooperation in the pandemic combat , he added.

Given complex developments of the pandemic at home, one of the missions of the NA delegation during the trip lies with vaccine diplomacy, according to the top legislator.

Hue lauded efforts by overseas Vietnamese, particular those in the six European countries, in promoting Vietnamese culture while integrating into the host societies.

He said the Politburo has recently convened a meeting to review the implementation of Resolution No. 36 on overseas Vietnamese affairs and issued Decision No. 12 which touched proposals raised by Vietnamese expats.

The leader said over the past five years, total remittances exceeded 70 billion USD, contributing to improving the payment balance and increasing the state foreign exchange reserves.

With the spirit of “leaving no one behind”, the Party and the State have arranged nearly 200 flights bringing home more than 53,000 Vietnamese citizens amid the pandemic, the leader said.
