Covid-19 should be a common illness for now: medical expert

With a high vaccination rate, Vietnam should now start living with Covid-19 and prepare to resume normalcy, according to the Hanoi Medical University Hospital director. Omicron has been confirmed by different countries to be less likely to cause severe conditions and fatalities among young Covid-19 patients.

There is a one-third reduction in the risk of going to hospital associated with the Omicron variant compared to Delta, researchers at Imperial College London confirmed in a scientific publication issued by the British government in January. The reduction in risk from Omicron compared to Delta increased to two-thirds when looking at severe outcomes like formal admission or death, the researchers said.

However, for now, with the rapid spread of the Omicron strain, it could be concluded that there is no hope of zero Covid anymore. "At this point, it is necessary to consider Covid-19 an endemic disease like any other disease that people usually get all the time. It means if you get it, you would visit the Covid-19 specialist department of a hospital for examination and treatment."

The payment for Covid-19 medical examination and treatment also needs to be treated like any other disease instead of being covered by the state budget as currently, he suggested. It is necessary to consider getting Covid-19 normal and avoid getting panicked if infected. The community also needs to change its mindset about Covid-19 patients and restrain from alienating them.

Da Nang to reopen all schools this month

With elementary students returning to schools Feb. 21, Da Nang City will have all its schools having in-person classes after a gap of about six months. The municipal administration announced Thursday that sixth graders will resume in-person classes next Monday while elementary schools will start receiving students from Feb. 21 onwards.

Da Nang allowed seventh graders in areas with low and medium Covid-19 risks to get back to school starting Feb. 7. Students from eighth to 12th grades had already returned to schools late last year. So far, any class where a Covid-19 infection is detected has switched to online teaching and learning.

Under the impacts of the fourth Covid-19 outbreak in the country, students in Da Nang have stayed at home and studied online for six months now. Most parents have agreed with the move to restart in-person classes.

Thailand to donate Covid-19 vaccine to Vietnam

Thailand’s Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration (CCSA) on February 11 approved a proposal to donate up to 3.55 million doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine to six countries, including Vietnam. The others are Myanmar, Laos, Nepal, Kenya, and Ethiopia.

In response to Thailand's signaling to the World Health Organization (WHO) its readiness to donate vaccines to other nations in need via the Covid-19 Vaccines Global Access (COVAX), the WHO has permitted the country to proceed with donating to the six countries directly, said Dr. Taweesilp Visanuyothin, spokesman for the CCSA. Following the approval by the CCSA, around 3.5 million doses of the vaccine will be delivered to those countries, he said.

Thailand will donate 500,000 to 1 million AstraZeneca doses to Myanmar, 300,000 to Laos, 300,000 to Vietnam, 400,000 to Nepal, 550,000 to Kenya, and 1 million to Ethiopia.

As of February 11, 185,254,387 doses of the Covid-19 vaccine had been administered, including 79,203,047 being the first dose, 74,674,139 the second, and 31,377,201 the third, according to VNA.

The infection tally now stands at 2,484,481, including 2,477,326 domestic cases in the fourth wave of outbreaks that started on April 27 last year.

Meanwhile, the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Health has recommended that the People’s Committee close down the 1,000-bed Covid-19 Intensive Care Unit (ICU) in Thu Duc city, saying there are now few severely-ill patients.
