Additional 26,379 new Covid-19 infections recorded across 58 localities nationwide

A further 26,379 new cases of Covid-19 were confirmed by the Ministry of Health on February 13, bringing the national tally since the start of the pandemic to over 2.5 million. Of the new cases, 18,269 were found in the community and 7 were imported.

An additional 84 casualties were also confirmed during the past 24 hours, raising the country’s death toll to 38,946 or around 1.5% of all infections. A total of 7,815 Covid-19 patients were announced recovered on the same day, taking the total number of recovered cases to 2,226,754.

Hanoi capital tops the daily case list with 2,940 new cases, trailed by Hai Duong (1,906) and Nam Dinh (1,894).

Vietnam to lift Covid-19 curbs on international flights

Vietnam will remove limits on the number of international flights coming and going from all markets starting February 15, restoring frequency to pre-pandemic levels.

Dinh Viet Son, deputy director of the Civil Aviation Administration of Vietnam, said Vietnam will end restrictions on international flights starting February 15, allowing flight frequency restoration to pre-pandemic levels. Son said other countries have acknowledged the new policy and only China has not agreed to resume commercial flights with Vietnam.

On February 11, the Ministry of Transport assigned the Civil Aviation Administration of Vietnam to hold discussions with aviation authorities of other countries and territories on resuming regular international passenger flights with markets that had direct flights to Vietnam before the pandemic.

Vietnam had already begun a gradual resumption of international flights from the start of this year while easing quarantine requirements. In particular, vaccinated passengers now only need three days of self-quarantine. Vietnam has recorded over 2.4 million Covid-19 cases since the pandemic began and more than 38,000 deaths. Around 74.6 million people have received at least two Covid vaccine doses.

Health ministry is required to issue guidance on Covid-19 treatment protocols for children

Deputy Prime Minister Vu Duc Dam has asked the Ministry of Health (MoH) to urgently complete and issue guidelines on Covid-19 treatment protocols for people under 18 years old, especially children under 12. He asked the ministry to immediately organize training for hospitals across the country in order to minimize the possibility of SARS-CoV-2 infection in the pediatric wards or causing an overload of patients.

The ministry was also required to guide localities to have plans for volunteers to support medical facilities if needed. The MoH, the Ministry of Information and Communications, agencies, and localities must also strengthen communication to get the cooperation of families, parents, and teachers in ensuring the safety of children.

Prof. Dr. Phan Trong Lan, director of the Department of Preventive Medicine said children with Covid-19 are also at risk of developing long-term symptoms. Even children who’d had mild initial symptoms, or were asymptomatic, were not spared from these long-lasting effects. For some, they experience headaches, fatigue, muscle pain, diarrhea, and joint pain. Some were suffering physical decline, prolonged coughing, and anxiety - a pattern seen in adults with long Covid.

Others had been diagnosed with Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome in Children (MIS-C). In some cases, children became worse and required mechanical ventilation, dialysis, and long-term treatment after being negative for Covid for two or three weeks later, said Nguyen Trong Nghia, Deputy Director of Dong Nai Children's Hospital. To promptly detect post-Covid symptoms in children, families need to closely monitor, even 2-3 months later, and go to see the doctor if they have any serious physical or mental concerns about their kids.
