Vietnam records 34 new COVID-19 cases

Vietnam reported 33 new COVID-19 cases on February 14 evening, including 31 infections in the northern province of Hai Duong and two others in the capital city of Hanoi, and 1 imported case in the morning of February 15.

The new cases brought the total number of infections in Vietnam to 2,229, including 1,330 domestically-transmitted cases, according to the National Steering Committee for COVID-19 Prevention and Control. Among the locally-infected cases, there are 637 patients detected since the latest outbreaks hit the northern region on January 27.

The treatment subcommittee said three more patients have been given the all-clear from the coronavirus SARS-CoV-2, raising the total number of recoveries to 1,534, while the number of deaths related to the disease remained at 35. Among the active patients, 39 tested negatives for the virus once, 12 twice and nine others thrice.

As many as 152,690 people who had close contact with confirmed COVID-19 patients or entered Vietnam from pandemic-hit regions are currently quarantined, including 683 in hospitals, 18,232 in state-designated establishments, and the remaining 133,775 at home.

HCM City's students to continue online study after Tet over COVID-19 concerns

Students in Ho Chi Minh City will continue their online study sessions instead of going to school after the Tet (Lunar New Year) holidays, in an effort to curb the spread of COVID-19, according to an official dispatch of the municipal People’s Committee on February 14.

Accordingly, local students are asked to stay home and study online from the end of the holidays until February 28. Although the COVID-19 outbreaks in the largest southern economic hub have been basically brought under control many people will return to the city for studying and working after the Tet festival, local authorities said, adding that the move aims to ensure the public's health and prevent the spread of the pandemic.

Educational establishments are also tasked with rolling out COVID-19 preventive measures and avoiding mass gatherings. Students in the city were previously asked to start studying online from February 2. Their Tet holidays last from February 8 to 16. The city has more than 1.7 students studying at over 2,300 schools at all levels, from kindergarten to high schools. There are in excess of 120 colleges and 270 centers for vocational training and continuing education.

Hanoi collects 296 testing samples related to the newest dead COVID-19 Japanese

The Japanese patient (male, 54 years old, Japanese nationality) was isolated in Ho Chi Minh City from January 17 to January 31, he was tested negative twice for COVID-19 virus. On February 1, the patient finished quarantine and was transferred to room 907 Somerset Hotel - No. 2, Quang An, Tay Ho to continue health monitoring.

On February 13, the patient suddenly died of an unknown cause. Tay Ho Medical Center took his samples and the results that came on February 14 showed that the patient was positive for SARS-CoV-2. Currently, the police department is working with forensic medicine to investigate autopsy to determine the cause of death.

The Department of Health directed the Center for Disease Control to coordinate the Medical Center of Tay Ho District and the Quang An Medical Center to set up a blockade at Somerset Westpoint Hotel to investigate and disinfect the area. Through preliminary investigation, 296 testing samples were taken, of which 210 samples were guests of the hotel and 86 were the hotel's employees, all of the testing samples are currently waiting for results.
