Japan to donate more Covid-19 vaccines to Vietnam

Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi announced on September 3 that the Japanese Government has decided to provide Vietnam, Thailand, and Taiwan (China) with an additional 440,000 doses of the AstraZeneca Covid-19 vaccine in early September.

Motegi said the decision comes after Japan made a comprehensive assessment of the Covid-19 pandemic in Vietnam, Thailand, and Taiwan (China), including infection numbers, the health system, vaccination, as well as demand for vaccination among Japanese citizens living and working there. The Japanese government hopes that with this vaccine supply, both local people and Japanese citizens in need can have access to Covid-19 vaccines, helping to reduce the risk of SARS-CoV-2 virus infection.

Earlier, Japan donated approximately 3 million doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine to Vietnam, with shipments arriving in June and July. Vietnam has received more than 29 million doses of vaccines of various brands such as AstraZeneca, Moderna, Pfizer, Sinopharm, and Sputnik V. Nearly 21 million doses have been administered.

Germany offers 180,000 Covid-19 test kits to Vietnam

A Vietnam Airlines flight carrying 180,000 rapid Covid-19 test kits worth EUR 615,000 (USD 730,290) donated by Germany to Vietnam left Frankfurt airport on September 3 and is scheduled to land in Cam Ranh International Airport, south-central province of Khanh Hoa, on September 4 before being handed over to Pasteur Institute in Nha Trang.

The batch comprises 150,000 test kits provided by the World University Service of Germany (WUS) and 30,000 others offered by Berlin. Dr. Kambiz Ghawami, President of the WUS, said that the gift aims to show Germany’s solidarity with the Vietnamese people, which is hoped to help the country control Covid-19 as soon as possible.

With the support of Vietnam Airlines, in May 2020, the WUS received more than 200,000 face masks as gifts of Vietnam to Germany, he noted, adding that this was evidence of the solidarity between friends that always stand shoulder by shoulder through difficulties.

Ho Chi Minh City district says Covid under control

District 7, home to a large expat community, has become the first HCMC locality to bring Covid-19 under control. It had immunized nearly 94 percent of its 238,300 residents by the end of last month, according to its chairman, Hoang Minh Tuan Anh. The single-day death rate has fallen from four to five a day on Aug. 23to two now.

The district achieved this by having 600 beds available for Covid-19 treatment in early May, triple the number recommended by the city, which allowed it to isolate 1,541 patients immediately. It has 34 mobile medical stations with two to three nurses each which have provided assistance to over 1,000 people. Anh said District 7 would continue with widespread testing and vaccinate everyone fully by the end of this month.

Ho Chi Minh City, home to 13 million people with 22 districts, seeks to control the outbreak before September 15, bringing the death tally down further and having less than 2,000 people admitted to hospitals every day. It also wants to vaccinate 70 percent of people aged 18, giving 15 percent of the second shot too. It has had nearly 232,600 Covid cases since the end of April, 5,963 on Thursday alone.

The new cases brought the national tally since Covid-19 broke out in Vietnam to 501,649. A total of 270,668 patients have recovered from Covid-19.

As many as 308 fatalities were recorded on September 3, bringing the death toll to 12,446. The country has to date administered over 20.83 million doses of vaccines, with nearly 2.96 million people having been fully vaccinated.
