Vietnam Day Held in the Capital City of Slovakia

The Vietnam Day in Slovakia was jointly held by the Vietnamese Embassy and the Vietnamese Association in the Central European country on August 28 in Bratislava, VNA reported Tuesday.

The event, which was held for the first time in a large scale in the capital city of Slovakia for the first time, had a special meaning in the context that the Slovak Government is to officially recognise the Vietnamese community as the country’s 14th ethnic minority group.

Attending the ceremony were representatives of leaders of many agencies and departments of host country, Ambassadors of many countries (China, India, Indonesia, Japan, Austria, Netherlands, Cyprus, Israel), and a large number of international friends and Slovakia; Vietnamese Associations and branches such as Women's Union, Veteran's Association, Business Association, Elderly Association, Youth Union; a large number of overseas Vietnamese are living, studying and working in Slovakia and all staff of the Embassy of Vietnam in Slovakia.

Addressing the event, President of the Vietnamese Association in Slovakia Vo Phuong expressed his wish to build an increasingly prosperous, hard-working, knowledgeable, and intellectual community aimed at raising the image of Vietnamese people to new heights as a contribution to the ever-growing Vietnam-Slovakia relations.

Vietnamese Ambassador to Slovakia Nguyen Tuan highly valued the role of the Vietnamese Association in Slovakia, showing his delight at the expansion of the Vietnamese community with recognised achievements in supporting flood victims in the central region and the National Covid-19 Vaccine Fund and pandemic fight at home.

Ambassador Tuan highlighted the significance of the event when the Slovak Government is about to recognise the Vietnamese community as the country’s 14th ethnic minority group. This will be an evidence for the integration capacity of Vietnamese people abroad, he held.

The diplomat also congratulated the Vietnamese Association in Slovakia for the success of its congress, expressing his hope that new leaders of the association will continue to support the community’s growth with stronger influence in the host country.

The diplomatic ties officially established on February 2, 1950 between Vietnam and Czechoslovakia, now the Slovak Republic over the past 30 years is the foundation for the friendly relations of the two peoples.

In the past struggle for national independence and national construction, Vietnam had received practical and effective support and help from the government and people of Czechoslovakia in the past and now the Slovak Republic.

Former students and officials who studied and worked in Slovakia have become witnesses and served as a bridge for the good friendship between Vietnam and Slovakia, which is increasingly being consolidated and developed across multiple fields.

Slovakia has been an important partner of Vietnam in Central and Eastern Europe, with two-way trade rising through the years.

Statistics from the Observatory of Economic Complexity (OEC) showed that two-way trade hit USD 1 billion in 2020. As of the middle of this year, Slovakia had ranked 45th out of 135 countries and territories investing in Vietnam with 12 projects worth USD 140.8 million.
