The 293 others, or 58.6 percent, will represent local administrations. Sixty-three, or 12.6 percent, of the seats will be assumed by top leaders of centrally-run cities and provinces, such as Secretary and Vice Secretary of the municipal/provincial Party Committees, Chairpersons of the People’s Councils and Chairpersons of the People’s Committees.

According to the resolution, about 95 lawmakers (14 percent) will be members of the Party Central Committee, including 12 – 14 Politburo members.

There will be about 25 – 50 deputies who are non-Party members and 50 deputies under 40 while ethnic minority people are expected to account for 18 percent of the number of official nominees.

The resolution also states that female deputies should account at least 35 percent of the total official nominees.

UNDP campaign helps build flood-resilient houses in Quang Binh

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Viet Nam Fund for Promoting Education on February 5 officially launched a crowd funding campaign entitled “Safe Houses Save Lives” with the aim of building 100 new storm- and flood-resilient houses for poor and near-poor families in the coastal province of Quang Binh, VGP reported.

The two-year campaign is part of a broader UNDP effort to support government response and recovery work in central Viet Nam. In the first phase from now to April 2021, the campaign is focused on helping vulnerable families living in Quang Binh province.

In her opening remarks, Caitlin Wiesen, UNDP Resident Representative in Viet Nam, stressed the importance of ensuring that society’s most vulnerable are not left behind as the central region recovers from the impacts of floods and storms.

“We believe that the more resilient houses are built, the less people will suffer from loss and damages when storms and floods strike, and the more quickly they will be able to rebuild their lives and livelihoods.”

Critically, with safe homes and protected property, the less people will need emergency support in the future. It is estimated that 100,000 resilient houses are needed to meet the demand of vulnerable households in typhoon-prone coastal areas. “With joined up action, we believe the goal can be achieved. We invite all partners to join with us to build more storm-resilient houses to ensure that no one is left behind,” said Wiesen.

Viet Nam reports five new COVID-19 cases

Viet Nam confirmed five new infection cases of COVID-19 on Saturday, taking the national tally to 1,980. The latest patients include four local infections in Bac Ninh, Ho Chi Minh City, Binh Duong and Quang Ninh.

The other is a 29-year-old Vietnamese repatriated from Japan on flight VJ7139 on January 2.

The same day, three patients were declared free of the virus and exited hospitals, bringing the total recoveries to 1,468.

The third wave of community transmissions began on January 27 in Hai Duong and Quang Ninh and has spread to other 10 cities and provinces with 394 cases reported, as reported by VGP.

Local wood industry to capitalise on export opportunities to US

With the housing market in the United States enjoying strong growth, demand for wooden furniture is expected to rise considerably, opening up bright export prospects for the Vietnamese wood industry.

According to data released by the United States International Trade Commission, during the opening 11 months of last year, the US’ imports for wooden furniture endured a decline of 0.6% to US$16.8 billion compared to the same period from 2019.

Vietnam remained as the largest supplier of wooden furniture to the United States throughout the reviewed period, with the export turnover reaching US$6.26 billion, a rise of 30.9% on-year.

The proportion of imports from the country accounts for 37.2% of the total import value, up 9% compared to last year’s corresponding period.

Most notably, Vietnam is the largest market for bedroom furniture for the US, making up 49.7% of the US’ total import value, followed by Malaysia, China, and Indonesia.

Nguyen Liem, chairman of Lam Viet Joint Stock Company, attributed this increase in US demand for wooden furniture to the impact of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic as it has forced many Americans to remain indoors and focus on activities such as renovating their homes and purchasing new furniture.

He emphasised that Vietnamese wood brands in the US market have significantly improved in recent years due to American people being willing to purchase Vietnamese wooden furniture at more expensive prices over similar products from the Chinese market, VOV said.
