Vietnam students win gold medals at International Mathematical Olympiad 2020

On September 27, the Ministry of Education and Training announced that all six Vietnamese students competing at International Mathematical Olympiad 2020 won medals including two gold medals, one silver medal, two bronze medals, and one Certificate of Merit.

Specifically, Ngo Quy Dang, 10th grader and Truong Tuan Nghia, 11th grader from High School for Gifted Students, Ha Noi University of Science under Vietnam National University won gold medal, translated from the Tien Phong.

Silver Medal belonged to Nguyen Mac Nam Trung, 12th grader from High School for the Gifted, under Vietnam National University, Ho Chi Minh City.

Chu Thi Thanh and Tran Nhat Minh, 12th graders from Vinh Phuc High School for the Gifted, Vinh Phuc Province and Le Hong Phong High School for the Gifted, Nam Dinh Province respectively won bronze medals.

Dinh Vu Tung Lam, grade 11 student from High School for Gifted Students, the Ha Noi University of Science under Vietnam National University received the Certificate of Merit.

With these achievements, the Vietnamese team ranked 17th among 105 countries competing at the competition.

The 61st International Mathematical Olympiad in 2020 was held online by Russia. Vietnam team joined the network at the Ha Noi University of Science, Vietnam National University under a strict monitoring system of the organizing board.

The competition this year witnessed the participation of 616 contestants from 105 countries and territories in the world. There were 316 candidates winning medals (including 49 gold medals, 112 silver medals, and 155 bronze medals), accounting for 51.29% of the contestants.

At the 2019 IMO, six students in the Vietnamese delegation won two gold and four silver medals.

Previously, on 24 September, all four Vietnamese students competing at the International Informatics Olympiad 2020 also won medals including one gold medal. With these achievements, the Vietnamese team ranked 9th among 87 countries competing at the International Informatics Olympiad 2020.

The International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) is the World Championship Mathematics Competition for High School students and is held annually in a different country. The first IMO was held in 1959 in Romania, with 7 countries participating. It has gradually expanded to over 100 countries from 5 continents.
