Addressing the event, Chairwoman of the city's Vietnam – US Friendship Association Nguyen Thi Ngoc Phuong affirmed the historical value of the Vietnam-US relations that have been tested over the past 25 years.

She reiterated the statement by US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on July 11, saying over the last quarter-century, the two countries have built a partnership and friendship founded on shared interests, mutual respect, and people-to-people ties.

"Tonight we celebrate the 25th anniversary of relations between Vietnam and the US with Vietnam’s literary masterpiece ‘Truyen Kieu’ (The Tale of Kieu)," said Phuong.

For her part, Marie C. Damour, US Consul General to HCM City, said Vietnam and the US have made great strides in healing war wounds, and the bilateral comprehensive partnership has developed fruitfully in various areas, from security to trade, economy, people-to-people diplomacy, health care, environment, education and energy.

The US will continue to consolidate the partnership and hopes for positive cooperation outcomes in the next 25 years, she said.

The US diplomat also highly appreciated the HUFO and the city's Vietnam-US Friendship Association for their contributions to the development of the relations between the people of the two countries through many cooperative activities.

On this occasion, the Vietnam Union of Friendship Organizations also awarded certificates of merit to the city's Vietnam-US Friendship Association and its Chairwoman Nguyen Thi Ngoc Phuong; the HUFO awarded certificates of merit to four individuals who have made positive contributions to the activities of the city's Vietnam-US Friendship Association.

After the celebration, the delegates watched a ballet show adapted from the world-famous masterpiece ‘The Tale of Kieu’, performed by the Ho Chi Minh City Ballet Symphony Orchestra and Opera.

Featuring excerpts from ‘The Tale of Kieu’, the shows enthralled the audience with a fresh new perspective by blending together classical ballet style and Vietnamese traditional dances.

In addition to the symphonies and contemporary music, the ballet also utilized Ca Tru (ceremonial singing), Xam singing (a type of Vietnamese folk music rooted from the North), and other Vietnamese folklore based musical genres.

‘The Tale of Kieu’ is widely regarded as the most significant work of Vietnamese literature.

In 3,254 verses, written in Luc bat ("six-eight") meter, the poem recounts the life, trials and tribulations of Thuy Kieu, a beautiful and talented young woman, who has to sacrifice herself to save her family.

The masterpiece has been translated into many foreign languages, including Russian, French, English, German, Romanian and Spanish.

The show marks the first time the masterpiece has been adapted to the ballet stage./.
