"Bao Dai is a young musician. He has applied machine learning techniques to enhance his works. Apart from composing, he is also an AI Research Scientist in the field of Natural Language Processing and Computer Vision. Last March, Bao Dai was the third person in Vietnam to become Google Developer Expert”, said Google’s announcement.

In order to be approved application by Google, participants must be referred by a Google employee or a GDE. This is considered the biggest difficulty of many Vietnamese talents because there are no “matchmakers”. Luckily, Dai received help from Luong Minh Thang, a Google AI researcher in the US, cum CEO of VietAI, Vnexpress reported.

According to Dai, the most important factor to become a GDE is the contributions to the community. This is calculated by the number of blogs, videos you have shared, or the number of times you have attended events, Tech Talk, etc with the role of a speaker. The scale and the number of participants as well as the number of people viewing the videos, blogs will serve as references for the jury to consider whether one person proceeds to the interview round or not.

After passing the submission round, the engineers will enter the interview round which will decide if they are eligible to join the GDE community. A prerequisite to becoming an "expert" is that they have to firmly grasp from basic to advanced knowledge in the field you pursue. In addition, candidates must profoundly understand the libraries and tools developed by Google.

For example, in machine learning, Dai had to review the knowledge from feed-forward neural networks to new SOTA models.

According to Lea Truc, founder of the Women Meet Tech community and a familiar speaker in many events of Google, Facebook, "Becoming a GDE is not easy. Google Developer Experts is really excellent and have an intensive expertise”.

Lea Truc added Google would support engineers with annual tours, academic programs, or international events. However, they must constantly update knowledge and contribute more to the community.

Bao Dai hoped that besides learning and exchanging experiences with the global GDE community, he could bring knowledge that he learned to help the domestic engineers. He also showed his willingness to be a bridge between local engineers and the Google Developer Expert community.

The Google Developers Experts program is a global network of highly experienced technical experts, influencers, and thought leaders who actively support developers, companies, and tech communities by speaking at events, publishing content. These professionals actively contribute to and support the developer and startup ecosystems around the world, helping them build and launch highly innovative apps.

The two other Vietnamese GDEs in machine learning are Ba Ngoc, the founders of ProtonX and VietAI Hanoi, and Binh Nguyen, an engineer working for Vin BigData.
