A fact-finding trip was conducted at floating schools on Tonle Sap Lake in Kandieng and Krakor districts (Pursat province), where it was discovered that many facilities were seriously degraded: the bottom was punctured, the classrooms were old and small. These schools need to be reinforced and repaired to ensure safety and maintain teaching and learning activities.

Among the schools, the school in Koh Ka Ek hamlet (Reang Til commune, Kandieng district) currently has two classes for children of Vietnamese origin and Cambodian students, with the participation of native teachers.
At the meeting with the people and students, the Vietnamese Consul General Nguyen Thanh Van said that the Party and State of Vietnam always care about the Vietnamese community abroad, especially the Vietnamese-origin community in Cambodia. He also asked the Vietnamese-origin residents on Tonle Sap Lake, the largest freshwater body in Southeast Asia, to comply with local law and not to break rules, especially the ban on illegal fishing. He also called on them to exert efforts to integrate into the Cambodian society, thereby improving their lives and contributing to the two countries’ relations.

Regarding the plan to support schools, Nguyen Thanh Van affirmed that the working group will prioritize education and care for future generations to ensure they have a brighter life. Particularly, he suggested that the residents enroll their children in the public schools of Cambodia in order for the children to fulfill the host country’s general education program, acquire certificates, and make decisions on their careers.
During the trip, VCBA representatives also had a working session with the Vietnamese Consulate General to discuss measures for assisting needy Vietnamese-origin residents on Tonle Sap Lake, including support for education, to help improve the quality of human resources and life and develop a strong Vietnamese-origin community in Cambodia.
