Eight years ago, Luu Sally (Nguyen Thi Luu), despite her busy schedule managing a restaurant, took on the roles of Vice President of the Vietnamese Association in Sweden and President of the Vietnamese Association in Östergötland. She made the commendable decision to teach Vietnamese to children in the city of Linköping, Östergötland.

The Vietnamese language class she organized was held at Elsa Brandstrom Secondary School. Here, Vietnamese students dedicate 30-60 minutes daily to learning their native language after their regular school curriculum. Joining her in this endeavor was Le Son Ha, the President of the Vietnamese Association in Sweden.

Sally expressed that teaching Vietnamese goes beyond mere words; it's also about deepening children's understanding of Vietnamese culture. "From the beginning, even the unclear utterance of a few Vietnamese sentences by them brought me immense happiness and joy," she revealed.

For her, each advancement her students make is a significant source of encouragement, and she takes pride in witnessing their steady assimilation into diverse cultural settings.

Not only receiving support from the community, Sally's class also received high praise from Sabina Carlsson, Vice Principal of Elsa Brandstrom School. Carlsson emphasized that learning the mother tongue is very important for foreign students in Sweden: "The school always creates conditions for students to participate in Vietnamese classes, along with the 15 other languages that the school is teaching." She added: "This not only helps students better access the curriculum but also creates conditions for them to maintain their cultural identity."

On September 18, Vu Thi Huynh Mai, the Chairwoman of the Committee for Overseas Vietnamese in Ho Chi Minh City, visited Sally's class. She was deeply touched by the dedication of both teachers and students to preserving the Vietnamese language abroad.

Mai stated, "The Vietnamese language's endurance is synonymous with the nation's. Regardless of your residence, your Vietnamese identity persists, necessitating the preservation of our language. It facilitates a more intuitive and efficient acquisition of additional languages."

In the meeting, a student conveyed his desire for support with Vietnamese books and the same notebooks that Vietnamese students use to practice caligraphy. This approach makes them feel more connected to a study environment reminiscent of their homeland. Mai emphasized that the preservation of the Vietnamese language is a collective responsibility, necessitating the concerted efforts of the entire community and assistance from organizations both domestically and internationally.
