On April 2, in Seoul, South Korea, the working group of the State Committee for Overseas Vietnamese Affairs, Ministry of Foreign Affairs led by Deputy Foreign Minister Le Thi Thu Hang had a meeting with Lee Key Cheol, commissioner of the Overseas Koreans Agency, and leaders of functional units.

Speaking at the meeting, Lee Key Cheol affirmed that this is a good opportunity for the two sides to share experiences in foreign affairs, especially in mobilizing and attracting overseas resources to build the country.

He said that in June 2023, this agency was upgraded to protect citizens and connect and support Koreans abroad.

There are currently 7.5 million Koreans and more than 3,000 associations abroad.

The State Committee for Overseas Vietnamese Affairs and Overseas Koreans Agency have many common goals.

They all support communities abroad to stabilize their lives, mobilize resources, and contribute to their homeland and country.

Commissioner of the Overseas Koreans Agency Lee Key Cheol assessed that the Vietnamese community in South Korea has integrated well, and made many contributions to the country.

Deputy Minister Le Thi Thu Hang appreciated the activities of the Overseas Koreans Agency and agreed to establish a regular exchange mechanism between the two agencies.

The Deputy Minister also said that currently, Vietnam has about 6 million people living and studying in more than 130 countries and territories, including about 4.3 million permanent residents, 0.6 million experts and intellectuals.

They are the resources contributing to the cause of building and developing the country through investment, and remittances, especially knowledge and intelligence.

The Vietnamese community in South Korea has more than 200 thousand people, including students, workers, and brides. They received support from Vietnam and the host country of South Korea, making many contributions to both countries.

Deputy Minister Le Thi Thu Hang and Commissioner of the Overseas Koreans Agency Lee Key Cheol had substantive and effective exchanges on supporting overseas residents, specific experiences in attracting resources, and preserving each nation's cultural identity.

This is also the first foundation for the two agencies to cooperate more closely in the future.

In the immediate future, there will be a mechanism to regularly exchange information on the situation of Vietnamese people in South Korea, and Korean people in Vietnam.

Deputy Minister Le Thi Thu Hang requested the Overseas Koreans Agency to continue to create favorable conditions for the Vietnamese community in South Korea to integrate into its society, serving as a bridge of friendship that contributes to promoting the comprehensive strategic partnership between the two countries.

On April 2, Deputy Minister Le Thi Thu Hang and the delegation visited and worked with the Support Center for Foreign Workers in Seoul.

The center was established in 2014 to help foreigners in South Korea learn about laws, customs, cultural practices, and administrative procedures, such as applying for visas and health insurance.

Speaking at the meeting, Kim Donghoon, head of the Center, said that this facility uses eight foreign languages in communication and supports foreigners who come to seek advice.

Vietnamese is commonly used after English and Chinese. Every year, the Center provides consulting support to nearly 22 thousand foreigners.

Deputy Minister Le Thi Thu Hang's visit to the Center shows special affection for the Vietnamese community in Seoul as well as the deep relationship between the two peoples of Vietnam and South Korea.

The head of the Center pledged to continue supporting Vietnamese citizens. He requested the State Committee for Overseas Vietnamese Affairs to update information on Vietnam's policies on Vietnamese people abroad, Vietnamese books, and newspapers.

Asking the Center to help and ensure legal rights and benefits for Vietnamese workers in the country, the Deputy Minister affirmed that Vietnam-South Korea relations are on the best development path ever.

This is also thanks to the positive contributions of the Vietnamese community in South Korea, as well as the Korean community in Vietnam.

The two governments will continue to have policies to support the communities of both sides to stabilize and integrate into the host society, serving as a bridge to promote the Vietnam-South Korea comprehensive strategic partnership.
