Vietnamese Community in Singapore Holds Contest to Make Banh Chung

The event brought a taste of hometown Tet, which is the most meaningful gift for Vietnamese people in Singapore as a new year is approaching.

A contest of making banh chung and banh tet with the themed "Vietnamese Tet" was held by Vietnamese in Singapore in the Embassy of Vietnam to Singapore on Jan. 15-16.

The event took place in the framework of a series of activities to celebrate the year of tiger held by the embassy, Department for Liaison with Overseas Vietnamese, and Vietnamese Student Association in Singapore. The series aims to preserve and enhance homeland culture in Tet and Spring, and increase cohesion and solidarity within the Vietnamese community in the host country.

The banh chung contest attracted the enthusiastic participation of both Vietnamese and Singaporean people.

Dong leaves, pork, lard, sticky rice, beans are carefully prepared by officials of representative agencies and their wives, students, and members of the liaison department. The pot to boil banh chung and banh tet are specially designed to suit the event, while firewood is utilized from discarded pieces of wood, and brick and tile are used to set up a stove.

11 teams, each having two members, joined the competition. Participants are of all ages and works in different fields, all join the event with cheerfulness and affection towards the homeland. They came up with many humorous names for their teams, such as "The fat and the thin, "First-prize team," "Cross-border friendship."

After the banh chung and banh tet competition, competitors, overseas citizens, spouses of the embassy and representative agencies' staff continued to make 100 more banh chung and prepared 100 gift sets, which were sent to students who could not welcome Tet in Vietnam with their families.

A Tet decoration competition took place on Jan. 16 afternoon, after which the awarding ceremony was held.

Vietnamese Ambassador to Singapore Mai Phuoc Dung said that he was touched by the atmosphere in the two days competition and highly appreciated the enthusiasm of the Vietnamese people, the careful preparation of the liaison department, the student union, and other volunteers.

Ambassador Mai Phuoc Dung said that all participants and volunteers have worked hard for the event. All of them were the winners and deserved two prizes. The first was his appreciation for everyone who enthusiastically participated. The second was the joy and solidarity atmosphere and the taste of hometown Tet, which is the most meaningful gift for Vietnamese people in Singapore as a new year is approaching.
